I was having a conversation with a friend when I mentioned that I was a “serial monogamist.” She looked at me funny and said “that’s terrible.” She went on to say that “serial” has a negative connotation: serial killer, serial rapist, etcetera.
Is there a phrase that uses “serial” in a good way? And nothing technical, please. “Serial cable” and “serial port” just don’t cut it.

There are a lot of people that may have, at one point or another, believed that a certain word in our language to be different from what it really is…since you mostly hear in a certain context.
Your friend probably never heard it being used to describe nothing else but unacceptable things: serial killer, serial rapist, etc.
You might be (or not) surprised about people’s ignorance in a lot of things, but that doesn’t automatically make them stupid.
