I don’t mean series - I mean serialized novels. A la Dickens etc. I know Stephen King published The Green Mile this way, and I hugely enjoyed rushing down to my corner bookstore to purchase the latest installment.
Is anyone doing this anymore? If so, whom, and how may I obtain his / her work? Is it worth reading?
I’d settle for a republished serialization of Dickens, too.
Alexander McCall Smith (of Lady’s Number One Detective Agency fame) has a series (the 44 Scotland Street series), each book of which first appears serialized in the Scotsman newspaper. I personally don’t like it nearly as well as the LNODA series, but to each his or her own.
Science Fiction novels are still published serially in magazines - Robert Sawyer’s latest “Triggers” was published this year in “Analog” (and then came out in hardback, etc.)
This is a big part of why I am no longer an Analog subscriber. Back in the days when few SF novels got published at all, but there were lots of SF/fantasy magazines, an author might very well have no other choice but to be serialized. However, the last serializations were nothing more than bloated snorefests. This meant that a good chunk of the fiction section of the magazine was given over to a story that was, IMO, a waste of space. I will accept this for ONE story in ONE issue. However, when it keeps happening, I think that probably the magazine isn’t getting enough short story material, or the editor is too lazy to go through the short story submissions. Today, there are plenty of publishers who will publish a full length SF/fantasy novel, but the short story market is much more limited.
It hurt to quit subscribing to Analog. But I’d never liked the serials for other reasons, even if I did like the stories themselves, and Analog had gone to a wonky publishing schedule, and an even wonkier subscription renewal schedule. My grandfather let me read his stockpile of Analogs starting when I was about 8 or 9. At first, he recommended stories to me, and later he let me choose my own reading material. So I was a legacy reader. But when half or more of any particular issue was given over to stories that I felt were unreadable, I’d had enough. I used to devour just about every story in every issue, and usually enjoyed the science article and other features as well.
I do read serial graphic novels, so I’m not totally opposed to serials. I’m just opposed to serials that don’t appeal to me, but which are included in my subscription and take the place of other material which might be more interesting.
Hmm, might have to check out this one! I love his Gentleman Bastards series. I’d enjoy the sci fi as well. ah no hope of getting a Scottish newspaper in Peoria, so no AMS for me
