Serious message- (DWI)

Good. It should be world wide.

I don’t drive, and I don’t drink.

And yet I’m still at risk.

That sucks. :frowning:

Not so. There is a mandatory suspension - I don’t remember how long it is, six months sticks in my mind. Also, first offenders get three weeks in the pokey. If you can convince the judge that you absolutely, positively can’t go to jail (sole caretaker for a small child for instance), you can pay a fine equivalent to two months’ income instead.

The cops are also allowed to stop you and ask you to blow into a breathalizer without observing any stupid driving first. And the blood-alcohol level is 2 parts per thousand, low enough that you may still be breaking the law by driving the morning after a bender. The fact that some people still try drinking and driving when all of this is common knowledge is particularly depressing :frowning:

I would like to bring this up again, as a new set of festivities begins.

Our community just lost 3 people, the main (and only) highway was closed for 6 hours to clean up the mess and remove the bodies.

Please folks, use a designated driver or take a cab - and please watch out for everybody else.

Thanks to Zette for starting this thread.

A bump for a good cause. I think that we’d all agree that we’d rather have even the most annoying posters here and making a nuisance of themselves than dead on the road somewhere. We don’t want to lose anyone that way. So folks, please don’t drink and drive, and watch out for them what does. (Intentional bad grammar for emphasis. )

bump

A good thread to resurrect, this one.

Thanks, Zette for reminding everyone about this VERY serious issue. My precious son was broadsided three weeks ago by someone running a red light. She was not under the influence but, this reinforces for me how easily accidents can happen when one is SOBER, let alone when drinking. PLEASE, everyone here on the SDMB have a safe holiday season, for yourselves and your (and my!) loved ones.

(BTW - my son was not seriously injured. A mild concussion and a few stitches in his arm, thank God.)

I recently got my license back after not driving for five years–I was convicted of DWI.

This holiday season I’m paying back my friends who have driven me around all these years by being the designated driver. It’s not as fun as throwing down, but my pals deserve it.

A bump for my buddy Jim, who died this summer because he was just fine to drive.

"Y’know, I’ve just had a few, I’m just going home, I’ve done this dozens of times . . . "

Well, that’s why you aren’t supposed to.
