Let’s say that the laser is only on for as long as it takes an aircraft to move its length when moving at 300 m/s. An F-15 is about 20m in length so out pulse duration would be about .06 seconds. Let’s make it 0.1 seconds.
At 1kw over 0.1 seconds the weapon delivers 100 Joules of energy. The 15 kW weapon delivers 1500 J and the 150 kW monster would deliver 15000 J. Seems like a lot but a 9 mm bullet (125g) traveling at 300 m/s delivers 5625 J.
I guess if you can extend the pulse length and keep the incident area small you could burn through the airframe/missile casing.
