Sexual predators after release

This, I think, is the key question, and one that has to be answered before we can address the OP. I was under the impression that the whole point of such castration is that it prevents recidivism by removing the desire and/or ability to re-offend. If the snake has been de-fanged, we can let it go without worrying about it biting anyone else.

I was lead to understand that it doesn’t necessarily stop them from reoffending-some of them may do it out of rage, or revenge then.

Moving this to Great Debates with a thought-If the Powers That Be believe that sex offenders cannot be rehabilitated, and the general public believes that sex offenders cannot be rehabilitated, and the sex offenders themselves are constantly being told that they cannot be rehabilitated, what do you think the likely outcome will be?

  1. Rethink this sex offender notification nonsense. I’d much rather live next to a sex offender than a murderer or armed robber–especially if the sex offense in question was a nonviolent statutory crime–but for some reason it’s sex offenders, not murderers and armed robbers, whose presence is announced.

  2. If a criminal is going to reoffend, keep him in prison. Either he’s ready to be released or he isn’t. Don’t let him out just to make him a pariah.

I wonder if tagging the person with some sort of RFID device when they are released would work?
You could use computers to track their movements and flag you based upon criteria you set into the system. Also, it would be an easy way to confirm a person’s actions. Maybe something similar for all criminals.
(Actually, I see this as the future for everyone. All cell phones after 2005 are required to have GPS locators in them. At that point you are being tracked whether you want to be or not.)

Only if you dial 911.

Nope.
Free cell phone tracking

You have to install that software on your phone for the tracking to work. It can’t track you “whether you want to be or not”.

For that particular software you may be correct. I have a cell phone at work that sits next to my speakers. I can hear the tower talking to the phone every couple of hours because the speakers make a racket when this occurs. I can also tell when someone is trying to phone me because the speaker makes an even bigger racket before the phone rings. So, what you are saying is that when tower talks to the phone, for whatever reason it is doing so, it can’t activate the GPS feature and find out where you are without your knowledge? No, I’ll put my tinfoil hat on and say that it is a foregone conclusion that if someone (government, telephone company, whoever) has access to the system and wants to track you then they can do it without your knowledge and consent. If the technology is there then it will be used.

Or maybe make notification something that has to be done for all violent criminals.

I am glad we were notified there was a child rapist in my community. Had he been incarcerated for raping an adult, I wouldn’t have been as paranoid about letting my children be outside, but this man HARMED a CHILD. I did not know if he is rehabilitated, nor was I willing to let one of my children fall victim to find out he was not ready to be in society.

Some people are awful good liars/actors. How will you know if a person is reoffend?

In dealing with precisely these issues, many states (I believe it’s over 20) have enacted legislation that allows for the civil commitment of sexual offenders until such a time as they no longer are a substantial risk to reoffend. Here is Illinois’ statute.

This type of commitment is generally done for only 5% of the sexual offenders who are going to be released from prison, so it does not answer all your questions. However, it allows for the detention of the worst of the worst sexual offenders.

Exactly. I mean, it’s possible in theory (especially in conspiracy theory ;)), but the current software in phones doesn’t work that way. And for many phone systems, there are other ways to track your location, less accurately, without your knowledge or consent anyway.

If he had HARMED an ADULT, would that make him less dangerous somehow? I think your paranoia is irrational. Someone who harms an adult has proven himself to have the physical strength and courage necessary to take on someone his own size, which can only make him more of a threat to someone smaller.

But you’d let yourself fall victim to an adult-rapist to find out whether he’s ready to be back in society?

I agree my paranoia may be irrational, but thats the great thing about my paranoia, it doesn’t have to be rational.

Hell yes. I would rather it be me than any child.

I think sexual predators are like the rest of us. After release they feel really relaxed and maybe want a snack or a cigarette.

. . . Please don’t hurt me . . . I couldn’t resist . . .

When you’re using that paranoia as a basis for making people’s lives harder… yeah, I think it does have to be rational.
