Hey no offence was meant. I noticed something, I pointed it out. It was probably just confirmation bias on my part. I’ve enjoyed your posts. They’re great fun.
Also, I had to rush the ending of the last post, I wanted to say that Autolycus (Nail’s wisecracks kick ass!), and AClockworkMelon(it took me a while to realise you were roleplaying a emotionless cyborg who isn’t that into planning. At first I was like - Wha? Why’d this jerk blow up the wall!? ) have been great too
Just wanted to give a heads up in advance: I’m leaving on a family vacation next Tuesday, 8/14. I’ll still be posting, but it’ll probably be at weird hours, and not as often as I’ve been doing so far. I have a work conference to go to right after that, with the same caveat; I’ll be back for reals on Saturday the 25th.
(Thursday, I’ll be playing my first 4E Shadowrun game on the tabletop at GenCon. So this has been a good warmup. )
Yeah, I’ll be there as well, so don’t expect much posting from me after Tuesday evening (since I’m heading to Indiana right after work on Wednesday) until the following Monday or so. I might get some time to check out the board, but I can’t guarantee anything.
Though, unlike SCSimmons, Liz and I will be doing just LARPs there.
In response to this: “Nail can’t help but admire the two women working with him, and is a little ashamed at his own performance.”
Nail certainly admires the handiwork of his two associates, but I don’t know if he is ashamed. In the sense that it can be functionally synonymous with embarrassment, then yes, Nail is a bit embarrassed. But shame means somebody feels about about something inherent to them, such as Nail thinking slightly “Boy I was worthless that fight. I feel worthless.” And while Nail certainly feels embarrassed that the outcome of his actions was not so effective or cool, he does not blame himself one bit. He made a damn good shot (of which the player spent valuable Edge in doing so), that just happened to do absolutely nothing. The gun was neither knocked out of the elf’s hand or damaged in anyway. Them’s the breaks.
As an aside, I just did some IRL research about this scenario and found it interesting that apparently it is possible to keep hold on a gun, but no mention about how extensively a gun would be damaged. No need to kill any catgirls though. Games should be kept using game systems IMO.
On that note, I probably should have PMed you and asked for the checks beforehand, and whether Nail would know on some level said checks. A STR+AGI check on a muscle-y and fast-ish looking opponent might not have seemed like as good an idea. And, as a player I was expecting that even if the weapon was not knocked out of his hand, that perhaps it would be damaged enough to malfunction or misfire. I know DnD has HP for items but am unaware of such a system for Shadowrun. I’m guessing if there is one that the elf man’s special machine gun was uber enough to absorb a hit from my magic gun.
Anyway I’m not concerned about the result really. While I blabbed a lot about it, that’s not what got me writing. In summary, Nail is more embarrassed than ashamed, and while I don’t mind you putting words or feelings into my character’s mouth, as A) it speeds things up and B) you’re good at it, I’d like to reserve the right to make any corrections.
Heh, this whole post was basically unnecessary, but dangit it just jut my craw a bit to be so ineffective and then have the DM auto-shame my character. Oh well. At least I’m not 4509 and haven’t been [del]raped[/del] ambushed twice in a row.
I appreciate that you brought that up. It’s not the first time this game that a player has brought something like this to my attention. I fully admit that I occasionally assume too much while writing up descriptions of character reactions and responses. It’s a consequence of getting too excited, and trying to rush the next part of the story without giving everyone a reasonable chance to respond for themselves. I’m working on it, I promise! You’re right that “embarrassed” is a much better word for the situation than “ashamed.”
The called shot to the gun issue is a little different. There aren’t any rules I’m aware of for disarming someone with a pistol shot, except the “call a shot” rule, which typically refers to an attempt to hit an area not covered by armor. For that shot, I admit I had to make up rules according to what “feels right.” For what it’s worth, it was a pretty unlikely roll for the goon to make.
Updates will start coming much more frequently soon. For the past three weeks I’ve been settling into my new grown-up job, working 12-15 hour days. Rest assured I’m not abandoning the campaign, I’m just swamped at the moment. Expect an update tonight or tomorrow morning. Thanks for your patience!
I’ve posted in the main thread to try to get this chapter of it back up and running. If we’d like to take a break after this chapter, that’s cool. I’d like to see what happens next, though.
