Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (open spoilers)

I don’t know how good a decision that was, you might have missed the funniest bit of dialogue in the movie.

Then I realized the weren’t monkeys riding on horses…they were monkeys acting like they were riding on horses!

I did catch that joke, and yes it made me laugh - I think he says that as they’re waiting for the secret path to open? I just bailed once the BMW raced into the trees towards its predictable success, and I came back when they hit the clearing.

I just watched in on Disney+. I thought is pretty good? The action and fight scenes were mostly great. But … the title has “the Legend of the Ten Rings” right there in it and other than a few seconds of narrated exposition in the beginning there was no explanation of where the rings came from; how dad got 'em; or what their actual powers are. The mid-credits scene seemed like a lazy attempt to rectify that somewhat, but the overall impression I got was that the folks over at Marvel Studios didn’t really know either.

“Ten Rings” can refer to the actual rings, or the man who’s been using them for a thousand years, or his criminal organization. I’m think they covered all those sufficiently for the story they were telling. Note that they showed what the rings could do, even though they didn’t explain much.

In the comics, the rings’ origin is from a planet not yet introduced into the MCU. As the storytelling in the movies continues to expand beyond earth, it seems plausible to guess that they’ll get around to it.

I would also submit that, after over a decade and 20+ of these, people really need to get out of the habit of expecting these movies to be closed loops, with nothing left unexplained: you gotta save something for the sequel.

I think you can get away with that with the famous names. Captain America, Hulk, Spider-Man, Thor, what have you. Shang-Chi is a much lesser known commodity. Disney/Marvel aren’t making these movies just for hard core comics fans. It took me out of the movie wondering about the rings (and also about the mysterious group of people who could fight against them.)

Speaking of Shaun and Katy, what did Wong need Katy for at the end? Sure, obviously Shaun/Shang-Chi is a top draft pick for the next round of Avengers. But where does Katy fit in? His sidekick? And why? She has no superpowers, skills, or training of any kind. Because she got off a lucky shot hitting a dragon the size of a 747 with a bow and arrow she just picked up the day before? Besides, aren’t we already grooming the next “semi-useless Avenger with a bow”?

I don’t know, I don’t see this as all that different from not explaining where Captain America’s shield came from until Age of Ultron, or not really giving an origin story at all for Mjolnir. The movie rings are already completely different from the comic rings, so I don’t think they’re counting on comic book knowledge to carry the movie in this regard.

I liked it. I was really bored by the giant avengers Infinity war thing. Talk about plot holes.

This has interesting characters, a nice family drama, entertaining background color with the relationship of children to their immigrant parents, and a really awesome fight on a bus. The fight on the building was fun, too. I loved the magic animals. Yeah, that’s minor, but i found them delightful. And the climax was predictable, but satisfying. I’d like to second whoever said above that it was nice that the people who died actually died, and didn’t magically come back to life when the evil dragon was defeated.

I also liked that it wasn’t all cringey with Asian stereotypes. The Asian Americans seemed like my Asian American friends, not like something out of a comic book from the 50s. I couldn’t stand Iron Fist.

I mean, this is fluff. It’s not a deep, serious movie. But i thought it was successful at what it aimed to be. I enjoyed it.

I fall into the category of old guy who read comics as a kid and am familiar with Cap and Thor. I may not have known the details of exactly how the shield and Mjolnir got their powers, but I knew what the powers were and what the weapons meant to the heroes. This is my first introduction to the rings and the character of Shang-Chi so it stood out to me. Based on the box office it seems a LOT of people will be familiar now.

I just re-watched it with my family and I loved it even more the second time. I think it is easily one of the best Marvel movies. Just outstanding.

Loved it. Also one of 2021’s best movies.

She’s his connection to real life, I guess. Someone outside of “the life” to talk to?

My thoughts exactly. Wong understands that friends can keep the heroes grounded and connected.

Could be something like, “Because you wounded the Big Evil Thing in the final battle, you are now marked by Destiny/tainted by his Evil Magic/seen as dangerous by Other Big Evil Thing.”
