I am a fantasy role playing gamer. Recently I developed a character that is a vampire and named him “Shatzi”. It occured to me that I have no idea how old the word “shatzi” is. It is a German word that means, roughly, “sweetheart” or “darling”. Now my vampire is almost 500 years old…how long ago did the word “shatzi” come into common usage in Germany?? I hope somebody could help with this.
Thanks,
Tartuffe52
The word Schatz (literally: treasure) is used in the same way, Schatzi is just a diminuitive and more informal. Unfortunately I didn’t find a cite for the exact form Schatzi but according to Grimm’s Dictionary Schatz has been used by Oswald von Wolkenstein (ca. 1377-1445) and there are several other cites from the same general era.
Thank you so very much!! I am going to use the character in a Buffy the Vampire fanfic, and I didn’t want to use this name for him and then find out that it is a, say, 20th century usage. Again, thank you!!
