I’ve always used an electric, and can recommend most Braun models. Avoid the ones with two or three circular cutters, though, and stick with a plain straight foil cutter model.

THE RESULTS ARE IN!!!
I just showered and shaved and thanks to all of you, my face feels great. I think the biggest thing was shaving WITH the grain instead of against it. The shave wsn’t quite as close, butit looks the same, and even if it is a little rougher to the touch, it is muchless painful.
Thanky ever so mush.
Now, aftershave products: what’s the best and why do we use them?

Keep in mind, the angles of your face might not be suited to an electric. I tried one a couple times and found my Trac II and foam (for sensitive skin) does a better job.

Sometimes women sneak & use our razors without informing us, so they get dull & when you use them, ack. Tsk.
Personally I like the Mach 3 razors better than any other disposeable razor I have tried. I used to use the two bladed ones and nicked myself all the time. I’ve never done it with this razor.
I also shave in the shower, i find it’s less of a mess for me to clean up (a sink full of stubble). Although I barely have enough facial hair total to make a decent moustache. I do shave against the grain, since I like the closeness, but I can see why it would cause problems. The only time I ever injured myself with a Mach 3 razor was when my mind drifted off, and I shaved a bit too low and caught my lip (bled for an hour).
Its funny you should say that Jo3sh, I was in London just this weekend and decided to treat myself to a shave and a haircut because I was feeling all fuddy-duddy and wanted to see what all the fuss was about. You gets yourself laid back in the chair and the lady rubbed some oil into my beard. She covered my entire face with a hot, wet towel with just my nose showing, a lovely feeling. After the towel came off, lots of foam was applied with a very soft badger-hair brush and then the first shave begins, with a straight razor, going with the grain on the sides and neck, the upper lip and then across the chin. Once that is done you are cleaned up a little with another warm moist towel, more foam is applied and the shave begins again, this time against the growth, also on the chin. You get mopped down again, another delightful hot towel is applied to open the pores, then an antiseptic block which tingles, followed by a cold towel to close the old pores down, and then a dab of aftershave. All in all, I can get the same closeness of shave at home in the shower, but you don’t get pampered to bits and you don’t have the thrill of having a total stranger hold a straight-edged razor to your throat. (That is a joke BTW) I have to say that I only shave that closely when I am going out for an evening with a lady as a really close shave can lead to some irritation (as did the professional shave), usually I only shave with the growth, rather than against it, and I use a skin lotion afterwards which calms down the dermis a treat.
Wow, this must be the first post ever that I have actually had something of substance to add, alriiiiiight.
Moonshine, how do they sterilize a straight razor? After all there is a risk of blood transfer. Do they use a new one each time?
The purpose of shaving cream is to keep water on your face, so if you shower & shave, its the same thing.
Erm…, I actually had my eyes closed under a hot towel when the lady got the razor out, good question though. I know that in the good old days they just used to wipe the razors off on their bloody tunics and tell you to stop complaining about the nicks.
Well, I confess I haven’t got a whole lot to add to this one 'cos for years I used my granddad’s Micronta Gem single-edge razor. Never got the hang of when I was supposed to drop the old blade and put in a new one, so some days I looked like Janet Leigh.
I’d love to get back to the soap & brush approach, though - but I can’t seem to find anything around here. Any ideas/recommendations?
