Having just now found out what a “safety razor” is I’m another safety razor guy. Gillette Fusion for the last two or three years. Gillette safety razors of one kind or another since 1985.
Never used either option???
Straight Razor, and you guys are wusses and I’ll tell you why after bandaging my face.
Electric razor works IMO best for men with white skin and light hair, when like me you are light skinned and (very) dark haired, you need to get it all off.
I use a three-bladed safety razor (even though I’ve come to the conclusion that anything more than one blade is a gimmick, you try finding a one-blade job). I’ve considered switching to a straight blade, but I wouldn’t know where to get one, and I can still find blades.
Ah this explains why light-skinned, dark haired me always seems to have stubble.
However, I think part of the reason that I always use electric is that my dad and my maternal grandfather always have (in fact , my grandmother gave me my grandfather’s electric razor after he died), and they both have darker hair than I. Of course, the main thing I remember about my grandfather was his whiskers, and my dad’s always had a full beard and moustache as far back as I can remember (although in his wedding pictures he’s clean-shaven), so he just shaves to trim, so maybe there’s something there …
I use disposable safety razors. I like Schick or Gillette. I’ve tried Bics and Wilkinson, but I don’t like them.
I see they still make safety razors that use replaceable razor blades. Anyone use them?
I do, but it is getting harder and harder to find the blades. The Evil Scheme is to discontinue the razor so I have to buy new blades before I used up the other ones.
Haven’t used an electric in years. Blade every other day keeps me smoother than electric every day. I just got back from the gym, where I shaved after my workout shower. Yes, I was the Creepy Naked Guy shaving at the sink right in front of God and everybody.
I don’t use shaving cream. Hot shower, rub baby oil on my face, then lather up with regular soap and go for it. I got some fancy after-shave lotion and cologne my kids gave me for my birthday, so I am about as groomed as I can get.
Regards,
Shodan
I’m jealous of the guys who can use the cheap disposable blades. The times I’ve tried to use them, they just give an incredibly uncomfortable shave and hack my skin to bits. The Gillette Fusion (and the others in the family brand) always give me a great, close, comfortable shave. I hate paying the high price for them, but find they’re just worth it.
My barber gives me a #1 all around on my beard, then trims it up with a straight razor. I picked straight razor, though I meant safety razor, since that’s what I use for maintenance at home. :smack:
I’m jealous of guys that can use electric razors. I’ve bought two in my life, and both are TERRIBLE. The latest one was an expensive Phillips brand razor I got two years ago. It just doesn’t WORK. I have to believe I’m doing something wrong…I still have a ton of stubble, and hairs all through my chin, even when I splash on “Lectric Shave” and clean the head every two minutes.
Safety razors cut me up something bad, so I really wish I could use an electric one properly!
I haven’t seen them in years. The only reason I knew they still existed was I was checking the spelling of the various brands I mentioned in my post and I saw razor blades are still being sold online.
When my parents moved into their house, there was a small slot over the bathroom sink for disposing of razor blades. The idea was you tossed the old blade in there when you put a new one in your holder. But the slot didn’t really go anywhere. The blades all just fell down inside the wall and stayed there.
My parents have remodeled the bathroom and the slot is no longer there. But the wall was never torn down and as far as I know that wall still has a pile of rusty old razor blades inside it.
Brands really do make a difference. Don’t buy the cheap dollar store brands. And don’t buy Bics because they’re crap. Those are the razors we used to give to prisoners when I was working and we joked that the reason the state bought them was because they were so bad that they didn’t have to worry about employees stealing them.
Heh. I’m reminded of one night on the Skytrain here in Bangkok. That’s our elevated train. A middle-aged guy was sitting there going all over his face with an electric razor! Battery-operated, obviously. I mean a really thorough shave, oblivious to everyone else. He disembarked at Sala Daeng Station, which is the stop for the Patpong red-light district.
Yes, I have used both electric and safety razors. I almost always have some form of beard, and it’s usually a question about which works best on that form. Sometimes it’s a question of can I find the charging cord.
I only use Gillette safety razors. Just like antonio107, electric razors just don’t work on my face; I’ll take several crafty passes over a spot and hair of various lengths remains. Maybe it’s the fact that I haven’t tried out the 200-dollar versions, but since the sub-100 USD models are useless, I’m hesitant to shell out that kind of money. Also, I have the white skin + dark hair combo. I need to get everything off for my face to be presentable.
I’ve used a Schick Injector-type single edge blade since I was 14. I’ve tried other razors and always go back to the injector blade.
They’re getting hard to find anymore. I bought enough blades off ebay that should last me at least ten years. Eventually, I’ll be forced into using a newer razor.
I have shelled out for the $200+ one. Still nothing.
Switched to a wet-dry Phillips electric last year. Unlike previous posters, I found that it was blades that were ripping my face to pieces. My skin is 100% better with this electric. I still keep a Mach 3 handy to deal with any rogue hairs that won’t go down.
Still you can call me a hypocrite…I still love the old fashioned barber blade and will go for those once in awhile…especially if I’m traveling abroad.
I’ve always used an electric razor. When I started shaving as a teen, I had bad acne, and a very rough face as a result; I imagine that a safety razor would have chewed up my face.
I’ve used a safety razor exactly once, ever…about 2 years ago, when my electric razor suddenly died, and I had a client meeting that day. I used the safety razor which my wife has in the shower for shaving her legs. It was undoubtedly (relatively) dull, and didn’t do a great job (though I was only using soap and water, not having any shaving cream).
Yep, leg razors are often dull as hell. The skin on your legs is a lot thicker than on your face, so you can use them longer without being irritated. That, and not using shaving cream will rip up your face like crazy.
I use a four blade safety razor, but I answered straight razor, since no one pretty much uses a real straight razor any more. In any case, all the blades are straight.
