Shawn Michaels

I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure I remember a match between them taking up nearly an entire afternoon on ESPN after school, with the Midnight Rockers both bleeding profusely by the end of the match. Might it have been someone else? It definitely could have been.

Yeah, well he’s got the Miz on his tail. Miz is only 17 wins away. That had to be the best line on Raw - glad it happened after 24 ended.

Spoiler for Smackdown:Jack Swagger continues the MitB streak of winning a title following winning MitB, pinning Jericho after Jericho was speared by Edge. Sounds like a good angle

I believe that at the very least, Michaels believes that this is the end for him. After Taker “dragged him up to his feet” after their match was over, Michaels completely dropped any pretense of having any injury whatsoever from their match and just stood there, waved goodbye to the fans, and cried. You never see them break character on stage, certainly not at the end of the main event of their biggest PPV of the year, unless something big is up IRL.

If this was going to be a phony, couple of months retirement (vacation), they would have milked it for all it was worth and had the EMTs take him away on a stretcher.

I hugely admire the guts it takes him to bow out when he’s at the top of his game, and obviously not 100% ready to go. I’ll miss him.

Hmmm…that could be the Rockers vs Doug Summers and Pat Rose from the AWA, which had the afternoon slot on ESPN at one point. Those episodes are shown fairly regularly on ESPN Classics. Or it could be exactly what you described originally, and I just never heard about it. After about 1983, I missed large chunks of wrestling coverage, as I had no TV in college, and when home during the summers was often working when wrestling was shown.

I concur–that really was a great feud, one of the first I ever saw.

I do remember Michaels from his World Class days, but IIRC, he was mostly a jobber; he didn’t get a big push until he worked for Gagne. I may well be wrong; it has been 25 years.

For those who read D-Odds’s spoiler and want to know why:

Jericho’s got sequestered jury duty for the next two weeks or longer, and thus cannot appear on television, thus he had to drop the title.

That was another unfunny April Fool’s Day joke.
