We need billboards for this?
Starting to think that CCW isn’t such a bad idea.
We need billboards for this?
Starting to think that CCW isn’t such a bad idea.
Way back when I was a kid my family would make the yearly vacation trip from Tennessee down to Perry to stay with the relatives.
All along the way there were all these “See Incest City” signs. Or “Incest City Only 272 miles!”. Or the like. On top of barns, sides of buildings, giant billboards, even ones plowed into farmers fields. Those things were everywhere.
Glad to see our social standards finally starting to take a turn for the better.
All billboards should be taken down. Fucking eye-sores.
“She’s your niece – not your piece!”
If you’re really going for Burma-Shave-style authenticity, you need to post one line at a time.
Not mentioned in the article, I think, but the billboard also includes the text: “Getting drunk is never an excuse.”
Oh, come on.
Eatin’ ain’t cheatin’!
Make an orange your main squeeze…not your daughter
Buy real Indian River oranges!
There’d be more outrage if the young woman on the billboard looked like this:
And yeah, I chose that photo for a reason.
You know a photo is bad when parrots are throwing up
This. And very well put as well.
Me too. And I really don’t get how someone can see that billboard and think it’s accusing THEM personally of incest just because you happen to be a father. If you’re not inclined to commit incest (and I’ll go out on a limb here and say that most Dopers will probably fall into this category ;)), then it’s just.not.about.you.
Do you also think Smokey Bear is accusing you of abetting forest fires? Or that Carly Cardinal is saying that you personally hate trees and don’t think they’re terrific?
But you see, people can and do neligently start forest fires through carelessness without meaning to so it’s not out of place to remind us to pay attention and be careful with fire. Otherwise reasonable folks do mistakenly think they’re not as drunk as they really are and try to drive so yes, point out to us that if we do and live through it we’re getting arrested. But I’m pretty sure tapping your daughter is not something that happens by mistake.
That said, the part about where to call for help, which IS in the billboard, IMO is what should have been displayed much more prominently.
What, like you’ve never tripped and fallen before?
I’ve worked in a high school, a jail, and am now working as a nurse so there may be some confirmation bias at work here, but I hear about incest with depressing frequency. One woman who was a jail inmate had been turned out to prostitution by her father after he “taught” her how to please men. She was 12. I personally reported a man who molested his own granddaughters and other girls and was criticized by family members of the perp who refused to believe a young girl outside the family who disclosed to me. Fuck them.
I’ll go one step further in my “defense” (such as it is) of the billboard:
If it’s a billboard that just says “Hey kids, call for help” then it’s setting its message against the message of your abusive parent.
If it’s a billboard saying “Hey parent, it’s not cool for you to rape your kids” in front of the kids then it’s eroding the authority of the parent to tell the child that this is okay, it’ll be their fault if they tell, no one will believe them, etc.
I don’t really get the “People will think this town is all about incest” angle – I don’t see a PSA for other abusive behaviors and think “Hey, this town has a billboard for battered women to seek help, they must all punch their wives here”. I just know that some behaviors are sadly universal beyond geographic or socioeconomic boundaries. There’s no anti-incest billboards in my town but I bet that some poor kid is getting abused by a family member.
How does this relate to the issue of guns at all?
Well, if your daughter knows where you keep the guns and where you keep the keys to the gun safe…
You use it as an opportunity for open communication with your child about abuse and inappropriate behavior. Incest doesn’t always involve parents or stepparents. It can be other relatives. Most children are abused by people they know and trust.
The upside is if the find out another child, one of their friends or acquaintances is being abused, they are more likely to tell you or another authority figure. They also better prepared in general to deal with avoiding bad people and bad situations if they know what’s out there and likely to hurt them.
