Sherlock Holmes (Asylum, 2010)

Thanks to the miracle of Netflix, last night the wife and I watched Asylum’s Sherlock Holmes.

Needless to say, we weren’t expecting much, given Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, :dubious: but we were pleasantly surprised.

Not bad at all. Nice recreation of Victorian detail, good actors in the Holmes and Watson roles (Watson played intelligently, and not as a putz), some reasonable extensions of the Canon, a nice steampunk vibe throughout (clockwork robot woman, mechanical dinosaur, octopus, and dragon, goofy ballon-ish flying vehicle), and a passing mention of Waterhouse Hawkins–what more could a Victoriana buff want?

It also had a trailer for Meteor Apocalypse, and it looks like Claudia Christian’s in it–hmmmmm…

My daughter rented it, mostly because it sounded so silly. I caught a few bits and was surprised to see it wasn’t horrible. She liked it, though.

I don’t know how Asylum makes any money. They can’t count on theatrical releases; is the direct-to-DVD market so lucrative?

I suspect their production costs are fairly low–the making-of feature on the Sherlock Holmes disc talks about a two-week shoot(!)
