Sherlock Holmes movie

Give me the elephant gun.

Get it? LoEG movie, LEGO?

Don’t explain your jokes, dude. You everybody to know you’re from Arkansas?

Yeah, me and Bill Clinton.

Concerning the…general demeanor…of my immediate audience, I felt some explanation was in order.

Oooh hard to tell from the trailer. Looks like a decent movie, but potentially not a good Sherlock movie. Worst: cartoon sound effect as Holmes jumps out the window. Odd: Sherlock in… fight club? Hmm: No deerskin hat / trenchcoat (I’m aware this was popularized after the novels and isn’t intrinsic to them but it’s still odd)… I tend to think of Watson as portly but I don’t know if this is also popularized after the novels… a highly sexualized Sherlock…

Will probably be fun if they can avoid the potential mental dissonance of too-much-variation-from-Holmes-stereotype and of the potential mood whiplash involved if the humor/drama aspect ratio isn’t done right.

This makes him sound like a queer fellow chatting it up with his fag hags.

Huh? What sound effect?

This looks like it might be a fun movie, but other than the names it doesn’t look or sound much like Sherlock Holmes. Although I’ve liked Downey and Law in other things, I have to admit I’m… skeptical.

Hey, it’s Conan Doyle’s birthday (1859) - huzzah!

It looks like it will be instantly forgettable.

Sherlock is holding a pipe, says something, then runs to the window and jumps out. As he is running towards the window you hear a sound effect similar to the one they use in western comedies when someone shoots a cowboy’s hat off, or when a cartoon character like Speedy Gonzalez speeds off screen.

Listen to it again. That’s not a sound effect, that’s the sound track. It’s a brief crescendo rising to the staccato bursts they play over the studio logos. None of which is likely to appear in the actual film, as the scores used in trailers are seldom taken from the movie.

Nope, I listened to it several times. It is indeed a sound effect. However listening to it again while watching closely I realized that the sound effect is actually the sound of a gun ricocheting off something, as you can see something break, and being shot at is apparently the reason for him running towards the window. I misidentified the sound effect as humorizing his departure rather than as being from a gun. Which is understandable, since the same sound effect is used, as I mentioned earlier, in cartoons for both guns and speedy departures. It’s still a cheesy sound effect, but it’s less silly as the gun than as the departure.

ETA: It’s at around the 0:33 second mark, and not at all like the crescendo noise that comes before the logo or the gunshot bangs during the logo. It’s a distinct ricochet type sound that happens simultaneously with the bullet shattering object.

Yes, it’s definitely a bullet sound.

The only indications that Holmes is a ladies’ man in this trailer appears to be 1 encounter with Rachel McAdam’s character, who is apparently wearing undergarments, which includes her attacking him, groining him, and leaving him naked and tied to the bed. Now, why he is talking to a woman in her skivvies is not indicated, but it is reasonable to conclude it has something to do with the investigation, and is not indicated it has to do with him trying to get nookie. Furthermore, the results suggest he has figured out her character is up to something, and she leaves him tied up in order to get away. The naked part is probably to help cover her departure, as the suggestion is she is some sort of lady of the evening.

What I’m not too keen about is the fight scenes: specifically, the hyper slowed fight gimmick of late in movies. Especially since at 1:05 when he is throwing the punch, the other guy looks to be visibly flinching as if he expects the hit but without any movement of arms as if to block. It’s as if it’s choreographed and the actor is expecting to be hit. Kinda sticks out in ultra slo-mo, and ruins the verisimilitude.

Otherwise, this looks like it could be a fun movie, if done right. A new take on Holmes, but potentially enjoyable. I’ll probably give it a go, especially if more promos as the movie approaches continue to reflect well.

As much as I think Robert Downey Jr is a very good actor, Jeremy Brett was Sherlock Holmes.

The classical Holmes has been done very well in the Granada series with Brett it makes sense to try another interpretation of Holmes. Perhaps they could have gone even further and placed Holmes in a steampunk setting; I would imagine there are some good pastiches along those lines. Of course a fresh interpretation doesn’t have to be a good interpretation so I will wait for the reviews before watching this.

He’s holding an M-1 Garand there.

I gather whatever Winchester Quartermain preferred wasn’t available in Lego scale.

Jeremy Brett was, of course, the Classic Holmes. But Brett is gone & Holmes refuses to die. They’ve been trying to finish him since Reichenbach Falls & he just keeps coming back.

I’ve enjoyed some of the pastiches. This Non-Classic Holmes looks pretty interesting.

It looks OK. It looks like a standard big budget action flick, with explosions, wisecracks, action scenes, plot holes, and a vaguely supernatural maguffin. It might be entertaining but it would be nice to see an actual Sherlock Holmes movie, which I fear won’t be made now.

I wonder if they’ll mention his cocaine habit.

Aye, could be entertaining, but it doesn’t feel like Holmes. Given that trailers are often fairly unrepresentative of a movie’s overall tone, I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt, but a lot of it didn’t really work for me. Take the hammer-fight scene - how many times have you seen the comically unequal matchup, the shrugged-off blow, and the protagonist yelping and dodging? It’s a classic bit in humorous fight scenes, and if it was a Jackie Chan movie, it’d fit right in, but it just feels out of place for Holmes. On the other hand, the line, “Watson, what have you done” was perfect Holmes.
