what’s the deal with this song? i doubt it’s a true story but i’m wondering if anyone can clear this up or post or point me to a site where sheryl says what it’s about.
The name Kenton is mentioned in the song a couple of times. This undoubtedly refers to Stan Kenton a pioneer of progressive jazz. Sheryl’s parents played in an amatuer jazz band that practiced at her house. The song mentions Leo who played trombone. Shery’s father was named Wendall and he played trumpet. Leo could be her father, or somone else in the band that Sheryl was particularly close to. Apparently, at some point, Leo died, and this changed Sheryls life. That about sums it up.
