It’s not that they don’t know the term “Protestant.” It’s that they prefer not to be called by a word which defines them only by their relationship to the Catholic church. Instead, they prefer to define themselves by their relationship (as they understand it) to their deity. Not hard to understand.

I really am not trying to be argumentative, but I meant what I said.

If you work in an industry of educated people (do you?), you can forget that there are people who are almost staggeringly ignorant. I’m here to tell you as a teacher that there are quite a number of people who wouldn’t be able to put a firm definition on “Protestant”, and would certainly never think to use it. Some of these people are even Christian themselves. It’s not a word that comes up without someone trying to make some kind of historical point. I’ve been raised completely in the American Protestant church, and the word hardly ever gets mentioned.
