It’s a moving experience to walk the quarterdeck of HMS Victory in Portsmouth. On the deck is a large brass marker, saying “NELSON FELL HERE.” I’m not surprised; I nearly tripped over it myself! Thank you, I’ll be here all week. Try the midshipmen’s nuts.

The uniform that Nelson was wearing at the time he was shot is on display at the National Maritime Museum iin Greenwich, along with other bits of Nelsonia.

Saw that exhibit. Zzzzzzzzzz…

Say, does anybody know the name of Odysseus’ ship in the Odyssey?

Wait a minute… I thought John Paul Jones was commanding the Bon Homme Richard when he captured the Serapis. Is that not true?

I read a story about that battle in one of those Time-Life history books once. It said that after the battle was over and the captain of the Serapis struck his colors, the two captains met in Jones’ cabin aboard the Richard and had a drink, toasting each other on what a fine battle it was. Shortly thereafter, the badly damaged Richard sank. It may be apocryphal, but it makes a good story.
