I need to ship a lithium-ion battery for an electric bike within the US. I’m a person shipping it to another person (not a corporation with a shipping department). The battery is Phylion XH370-10J. It’s not charged, I haven’t used it in 2 years. How difficult is it going to be to ship this? What is the easiest way? It looks like USPS won’t take a battery that contains more than 2 gm of lithium and this battery weighs almost 10 lbs. I looked on the web sites for USPS, UPS, and FedEx to find out what the restrictions are. So my question is… Is it easy to ship such a battery, and what’s the easiest method?
call or go to the local UPS and FedEx offices, they should tell you their rules.
You can probably ship it via FedEx ground (Home, I think they call it now) with stiff hazmat fee. ($35 + shipping charges, IIRC) I think that is how my Lithium batteries have all arrived, including for an E-bike…but it has been several years. Also I think hazmat always requires a receiving signature, which can be a pain in the butt for working folks.
Go to eBay and search for comparable items:
Click on the Shipping and Payments heading (right of the description) to see what they are using. Looking at a few entries my impression is that they are simply using standard ground shipping–not haz-mat service.
Here’s a link to the UPS guide to shipping batteries.
And the FedEx Guide
I brought it to our local UPS Store to ship by ground, and told them what it was. They said they could not ship it. They said that maybe the main UPS depot could take it, but I’d need to provide documentation about watt-hours, etc. (which I do not have). So I took it to the Fedex store to ship by ground, and said it was bike parts, and had no problem. I debated telling them what it was just to find out if they’d take it, but I chickened out because I didn’t want to have to go to yet a third place.
