Ok–this was really funny. Thank you!
Is there a way to upload a jpeg of the pic/caption? I have it–yellowed with age and ripping at the fold seam. But then, I’m positive someone would accuse of doctoring the caption with Photoshop so not sure it’s worth the effort!
PS it isn’t available online for several reasons–1984 was pre-net; it’s a caption I’m betting some at that newspaper would like not to revisit (phone rang off the hook with angry readers)…I do love that’s it’s still garnering attention though. A great story to tell especially when you own the clipping!
It came from the Crystal Lake Morning Herald Monday March 19 1984.
I still have the paper. Crystal Lake Morning Herald is now know as the
Nortwest Herald for McHenry County. Which is located in Illinois.
According to OCLC, the following libraries should have bound or microform copies of this item:
Having worked at two newspapers myself, I have no problem believing the “shitload of snow” photo caption appeared just like that.
I remember a Time magazine article from the late 1970s, referring to an editor for a major newspaper (the Boston Globe, I think, but I’m not sure about that), who wrote a placeholder headline for an article about a major Jimmy Carter speech. “More mush from the wimp,” the editor wrote. No one noticed and the headline was printed as is. The paper apologized to the President and the editor wasn’t disciplined or fired, IIRC.
Hm… Crystal Lake, Crystal Lake… wasn’t there a camp there once?
I can definitely attest to the authenticity of this story. I grew up in Crystal Lake, Illinois and was a newscarrier for the Crystal Lake Herald, renamed the Crystal Lake Morning Herald. It is now the Northwest Herald. I have told my husband about this story in the past but he never believed it until now. Thank you, Dopers!!
Triple zombie. Is this some sort of record?
Since the OP was solved years ago, let’s close this one.
