If New Jersey recognized my California CCW I would have taken one of my EDC pistols there on my last visit (Via the checked baggage process) ,not all states are reciprocal to other states permits …

You are confusing checked baggage with carry-on baggage.
Although after this incident, regulations may change.
He got it almost right.
news reporting someone matching his description went to FBI 2 months ago in ANC and said he was forced to watch ISIS videos by the government.
Not disputing the reports of what this guy did, but I don’t think the baggage claim area at any airport I have ever been to in the US is secured in anyway.
I guess, what I am trying to ask is, why is it important that he checked the gun and got it from his luggage? Another person could just as easily walk-in off the street with a suitcase full of guns and ammo.
There’s no connection to my state. Ft Greely is in Alaska.
This could have been much worse.

By the way, point of clarification: “Hollywood” here is just Fort Lauderdale, correct? There wasn’t a related shooting in Los Angeles?
Hollywood, in this context, is a city next door to Fort Lauderdale. The airport is near both, and is called Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood for obscure historic reasons.
So what we know is the killer was an active-duty member of the armed forces who was discharged four months ago; he used his long gun to shoot people while yelling, “I’m not a Jew,” and then reloaded his handgun multiple times while remaining silent as he shot.
Did I miss anything?
It was a very dark night in the middle of the day.
You got most of the details wrong; prolly not your fault as there is a lot of wrong information contained in this thread (both in posts and in links).
I don’t recall anything about a long gun; AFAIK he had a pistol. I have seen no credible cite that he said or shouted anything.
[The most recent AP update:
The shooter went to police in Nov. claiming he was being forced by the government to watch isis videos, but was still allowed to check a firearm.
They are not secured areas in Florida. Anyone with a carry permit can have a concealed firearm on them at the baggage claim. Whether picking up friends and meeting them at the baggage claim, or getting off a plane and loading the pistol in the restroom, either is legal in Florida with a CCW.
The luggage/plane angle is a nonissue. He could have just walked in off the street and done the same thing.
I think it is, or was, in unincorporated Broward, am I right? So they named it after the major cities it was between.
I watched both the Lea interview on MSNBC or CNN and the John Schiler interview on Fox News. Their accounts are nearly identical. I think Schiler was several feet closer to the shooter. He was at the baggage carousel, and as he pulled his first bag off he heard some pops and the person standing next to him fell, shot in the head. Then the person on his other side fell. Schiler then dropped to the ground. Said he didn’t hear the shooter say anything before or during. Shooter went through three magazines then stopped. One of the victims next to Schiler said he was on coumidin, and Schiler’s wife or mother was trying to apply pressure to the wound.
According to Wikipedia, it’s is, in fact, in unincorporated Broward:
I was surprised by that. I always assumed it was in Fort Lauderdale proper. The maps make it look like it should be in Dania Beach, which is where my old office is.
Ugh, degree of separation issue, from his background info when he was deployed to the sandbox he was with my Dad’s old unit (130th Engineers). And I was connecting at FLL just yesterday.
As I understand it, as long as you follow the proper procedure to declare your firearms and ammo to the airline and secure it in transit, it qualifies to be checked luggage and theywill put a particular tag on it to make sure it’s kept an eye on; but then ***you *are responsible to be in compliance with the local laws upon recovering constructive possesion of the firearm. This created problems in the past for people who, having a layover in, say, JFK, would experience a cancellation of the connecting flight and have their originally checked-all-the-way luggage delivered into their hands and now found themselves transporting a firearm through a severe-gun-control jurisdiction w/o a permit. In a trip between Alaska and Florida he likely only needed to comply with the manifest declaration.
As mentioned, in the USA the baggage claim areas are considered “landside” out of the secured zone and at FLL someone armed could have just driven to the curb and walked in. (plus, as of now, “saying weird-ass things to police about the government” is not yet an automatic disqualifier from traveling, owning weapons, or traveling with the weapons you own)
The shooter wasn’t active duty; last news I heard (Yahoo/Fox/CNN/etc.) stated he had received a general discharge, apparently for disciplinary issues, IIRC.
