Shooting at Paris Newspaper

Link.

As of now, 12 are dead, including a cartoonist known for his illustrations of Mohammed.

In a video provided in the link you can see the gunman yelling “Alluha Akbar.”

Pit thread already under way for a while (gives you leeway to be more… expressive).

Our proper response should be based on the recent North Korean attack on Sony: Don’t give in, and show the movie to an even larger audience .

President Obama should make an official statement, on prime time TV. Publically declare that all newspapers , in every country, should refuse to give in to terrorism…Then he should go one step farther and state out loud that all the news agencies reporting this incident have a moral obligation to publish the cartoons. (They are private businesses, so he cannot control them of course…but he can influence their decisions, just like he influenced Sony.)

He should then lead by example: while standing at the podium, hold up posters of some of the cartoons . And issue an executive order requiring the US State Department to publish them on its own websites,so that they made easily be downloaded by the entire free world.

If Sony can do it, so can the United States of America.
It could even become an “Ich bin ein Berliner” moment for the President

Imagine if the New York Times, Fox News, and all the major print and TV news agencies stood together for once, and proudly publish the offending cartoons, in millions of copies.

Too bad it will never happen.

Thanks for the link, I don’t know how I missed that. I’ll ask a mod to merge threads or close this one.

Maybe the French can dust off the guillotine for these shitheads. Actually, given how ISIS and their ilk like to behead people, maybe that should be the standard punishment for Islamic terrorists.

Actually, I’m still not fully convinced that this wasn’t just an elaborate publicity stunt on Sony’s part. But the principle is sound. These cartoons should be reproduced everywhere.

Wonder how the people who call themselves moderate followers of the religion of peace convince themselvs tht they wanna call themselves even a moderate follower of such a faith when they see such incidents happen all over the world on a daily basis…

Moderate Muslims also believe that pictures of the prophet shouldn’t be created or distributed.
Why rub their noses in something abhorrent to them? Because of a childish need for a nyah nyah response to terrorism?

No. Because of a need to make the point that this planet is shared by about 7 billion individuals, and part of that sharing is tolerating those who do not share your beliefs.

When the other side is people who think it’s appropriate to murder because some cartoonist made a silly drawing of The Prophet, I think drawing pictures, silly or otherwise, of the dude is an entirely appropriate response. We can tattoo it on the murderer’s faces and let them see what’s worth cutting off to unspite their beliefs.

Yeah we’re saying nyah nyah for some silly little beheadings and bombings and shootings. We’re such meanieheads.

Have you ever heard of Piss Christ? Christians were offended by that but they got over it. If some Muslims feel the need to slaughter people for a goddamn comic I don’t think those who protest by showing images are being the childish ones.

I’m not sure that being intolerant of a tenet of Islam is a great way to make a point about tolerating others who don’t share your beliefs.
It kinda sounds like the exact opposite, something borne out of a bias that your beliefs are the correct ones.

The French foreign minister disagrees with you:

Is it really sensible or intelligent to pour oil on the fire?

France has already had some problems with intolerance of their growing Muslim population. I have a feeling this isn’t going to help . . .

Lets add a few dozen more to todays terror total…

Because Islam isnt really compatible with French values. Libertine values arent acceptable to even moderate Muslims.

OK fine. We’ll conform to their tenets regardless then. That’s bound to work. We all know that doing exactly what the bully demands makes things turn out just peachy.
History shows that appeasement works…right?

Tell me. Are you suggesting that no-one should ever show such cartoons? occasionally? if so, how often is too often? No jokes or insults about mohammed? No criticism of him or his religious tenets? How exactly should we behave in order to reduce our chances of being shot in the face, beheaded or blown up?

And I don’t think anyone has suggested they can’t believe what they want but there is no right to extend it beyond your own personal space. You have no right to live your life un-offended, that is the price of free speech and democracy. If you aren’t willing to accept that…tough. Use due process of law if you feel you’ve been wronged.

I will tolerate any belief or any action that does me and my fellow man no harm. Once such belief or action impacts me materially then I won’t tolerate it. I expect the same courtesy in return.
And no. Cartoons, comedy, film, art, speech etc. should not come under that banner.

I just read a story in the Daily Mail that said, “Killers fled in stolen car across eastern Paris after a ‘mass shoot-out’ with police officers and remain on the loose”.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-...ttack.html

That struck me as very suspicious. Have you ever heard of some killers in a stolen car surviving a “mass shoot-out” with police?

I can’t imagine how these killers could have been involved in a “mass shoot-out” with police while driving a stolen car and escaped uninjured.

It just smells like bullcrap to me. But we’ll have to see as the story unfolds.

I just don’t trust the police to tell the whole truth about these stories at the outset.

P.S. After reading that story, I sure can’t imagine these idiots were sent by some Al Kaeda masterminds because if they think this will stop the French press from satarizing “The Prophet”, I think they are in for a big, big surprise. But then again, these are the French. So who knows what kind of deals these guys will make.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the French govt agreed to let them travel to some mid Eastern country in a private jet and it serves them champagne (not very Islamic, is that?).

In Britain or America, the dead police man would become a martyr and the press would go ballistic and satirise the prophet 100 times more than before.

But I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens next.

P.S. Can anyone translate what the cartoon says in French? It is:

100 Coups de Fouet se vous n’est pas morts de rire.

I know that “se vous n’est pas morts de rire” means “if you don’t die laughing” but I don’t know what the whole thing means.

Oh. According to that story, later on, it says the translation is:

‘100 LASHES IF YOU DON’T DIE OF LAUGHTER’

Just shows you how good the accuracy of online translation sites are. Not very accurate, are they?

If you’d like to see some pictures of the attack, there are plenty in the story I linked to above.

There is also one picture of a police shooting. Unfortunately, it shows a policeman who accidentally shot himself.

That is what was written under this picture, “Picture of policeman who accidentally shot himself”.

I’m surprised they had to tell us it was an accident. I would have been very surprised if it said, “Picture of policeman who intentionally shot himself”.

I don’t trust the police. I trust them less and less the longer these kinds of stories take to develop to the truth.

The link in your post doesn’t work?

If you check out the Pit thread, you’ll see that the metro police had no guns. So the shooting was all one way.

They removed the story. But you can Google “Daily Mail Online Paris Shooting” or something similar.

Or try this one:
