Short quotes for graduation

Hi there; it’s short notice, but I need some help coming up with short quotes to put on our junior banner. Our deadline’s Friday, 1/17/03, and I was hoping for some suggestions. No worries if you can’t help, but I’d appreciate anything you could give me.

I know you guys are great in a pinch; I always get prompt responses from you. Thank you dearly for that.

Not terribly short, but one of my favorites:

Isn’t it strange that princes and kings
And clowns that caper in sawdust rings
And ordinary folks like you and me
Are builders of eternity?
To each is given a bag of tools,
An hourglass and a book of rules,
And each must build ere his life is flown
A stumbling block or a stepping stone.
– Anonymous

Or:

Destiny is not a matter of chance;
it is a matter of choice.
It is not a thing to be waited for,
but a thing to be achieved.
– William Jennings Bryan

Or (paraphrase; I don’t have the exact quote handy):

You’ve got to jump off cliffs all the time – and build your wings on the way down.
– Ray Bradbury

Every morning on the African Savanah, the Gazelle wakes up, knowing that he must run faster than everyone else to stay alive and escape the lions that are constantly hunting him down.

Every morning on the African Savanah, the Lion wakes up, knowing that he must run as fast as he can to catch his food for the day and stay alive, knowing full well that all the Gazelles out there will be running for their survival.

The moral of the story is, whether you are the Lion or the Gazelle, when the sun comes up, you better be running.

Thanks for the ideas, you two. My deadline was yesterday, and I handed them in. We’re voting on Tuesday, and I’ll be sure to post the winner, be it from here or not.

Hugs and the Peace of the Shire to yeh!
