Posted on a mailing list today, someone was looking for the title of a short story about a theory that lost socks become coat hangers, which is why you always lose socks but gain coat hangers.
The poster thought the short story might be by by C.M. Kornbluth or Henry Kuttner, written in the fifties.
Does this ring any bells for anyone?
That sounds very similar to Avram Davidson’s “Or All the Seas with Oysters.”
Holy Fast Response, pinkfreud! I’m checking with the poster.
I came in here all fast-like, ready to post my answer – but I have a feeling it’s not The Scarlet Ibis. Is it?*
*I know it isn’t, but it’s one of my favorite short stories from childhood and I just had to bring it up in response to something.
The poster got back to me last night after I was asleep. pinkfreud was right, it was Avram Davidson’s “Or All the Seas with Oysters.”
Thanks. As always, the SDMB amazes me!
