I’m in the need for a new 12 gauge. I’m pretty sure I want a semi-automatic, but an affordable over-under might do as well; I don’t want a pump. Also, gas operated would be best; my recoil operated one is not doing so well. Price range is no more than 1200.
Mostly I would use it for light hunting (squirrels, maybe doves some day), and pest control (crows, armadillos, etc). Also, some skeet shooting from time to time.
So, what models have you tried and which were your favorite?
Do you have access to something like a Gander Mountain or Cabellas that’s loaded with models so you can test for fit? I found great benefit to trying on those from a number of manufacturers and, sure enough, it was always one maker that seemed to fit me best; one that when shouldered always simply fell into place effortlessly and lined up just right. Granted, you can alter most any to custom later but a good initial coupling is a great way to start.
My fav is a Beretta A-303. I discovered it after they’d ceased manufacture but hunted down a pristine copy and it’s absolutely a slayer. With over 300 years of manufacture, Baretta knows what’s going on and there’s many models to choose from.
Thing is, there’s so many good guns out there. You’re really blessed as to timing. Look, be patient, don’t scrimp, have it fitted and enjoy. For 1200, and probably a bit less, you’re going to get a marvelous gun.
One more thing… most now have it but get one that features adjustable choke inserts for the bore end. Dial a pattern. Makes you muy versatile for most any game.
One more thing… don’t sell the 20 short. I’m a convert after using an over and under Beretta 20 in Argentina on dove. Light, quick and, most importantly effortless, so you can do it all day. Pops 'em right out and an easy 3 finger reload from your bag. For what you’ve listed, it’s more than adequate.
Shells aren’t cheaper but if you’re pushing over 500 or so a day your shoulder will thank you.
