Aquaman has the same problems Namor does. In both cases Atlantis was badly conceived, from the moment you have non-sealed-domes Atlantis, you’re already jumping the shark.
That said Aquaman is consistantly great on “The Brave and the Bold” cartoon, where he functions kind of like a Marvel’s Hercules. If they ever do a Justice League movie and include him, they should use that take, rather than pissed off barbarian from the deeps.
So, no movie for Arthur Curry, and I hope no movies for Namor as well (unless they manage to do some sort of Superpowered “The Big Blue”)
That’s his other problem. His new ‘I’m badass! Really! Badass!’ schtick is, even if you buy into it . . . just turns him into Namor with better hair and one less hand.
Namor at least had the decency to fight nazis.
DC and Marvel have always had a fun cycle of influence/ripoff. Overall, I think it’s been a positive thing.

Neither ever managed to get Sue Storm in bed. Though now that I think on it, Franklin did look more like Aquaman than Mr. Fantastic . . .
I watchedthis other one from the makers of Smallville when it was floating around torrent space. It was perfectly watchable if you like Smallville-type shows.
There’s no reason it can’t be done. But there’s a lot of reasons why it wouldn’t be done.
It’s certainly possible in conception - I’d definitely watch Balance’s movie.
But the way Hollywood is I can’t imagine anything other than an overblown Smallville spinoff actually making it to the screen.
It might have to wait for Avatar 2 - Cameron is setting a lot of that underwater and will no doubt invent lots of new filming techniques. And of course it will be incredibly exhausting for the actors.
The only thing that will be weird is that everyone speaks telepathically. That could get strange with no one speaking for nearly the whole movie.
It could be interesting, though–I wonder how well the actors could emote in conversation without actually speaking. Maybe it would be helpful to record the telepathy voiceover first, and play it back while they’re actually filming the scene?
The creators of Smallville created a pilot for Aquaman that must have had some money behind it (Ving Rames and Lou Diamond Phillips were in the cast) but it wasn’t picked up. People magazine dubbed it “Dumber than carp”, but the pilot did go on to be the top downloaded TV show on itunes in 2006. There is a recap of it at the Agony Booth here. My favorite quotes from the recap:
If you are unfamiliar with the agony booth, they write hilariously looong recaps of movies and TV shows (this one’s eleven pages!) Second quote:
I think the second one is my favorite because it occurs in a scene when AC (teenaged aquaman), Ving Rames, and an evil siren are on a boat in the middle of a thuderstorm, and Aquaman still needs the water pitcher in order to get wet.
