Was it perhaps a slightly expurgated version? I remember seeing it in high school in the 80’s too, but I don’t remember the nudity. I do remember the balcony scene, which had us all squirming with embarassment–the teacher was sitting right there, for goodness’ sake! If there had been actual nudity, we might all have died right there in our seats. Ah, horrifying memories of high school…

I suppose that’s possible. Are you sure if was the Zeff. version? It absolutely, positively showed a glimpse of Olivia H’s bosom and whats-his-name’s butt.

Well, it was years ago, but I remember the dress very well, and I’m pretty sure that was it. Maybe the teacher just edited it a bit or something? I mean, the idea of showing even flashes of nudity to the average class of 14-yo’s in 1987 must have struck cold terror into the heart of most English teachers who wanted to retain some vestige of control in the classroom…

I don’t know that your teacher would have had the technical equipment and know-how to do that, but perhaps she had a bowdlerized version. Heck, showing some teenaged guy’s butt in classroom full of 14-year-olds would probably cause a few snickers even today. Let alone Olivia Hussey’s breast.

My 9th grade English class (mid-90s) watched that version of Romeo & Juliet, unedited, and there were no riots or exploding heads.
