SS - Well, I have to agree with everyone else here.
Big Bang Theory is a completely valid & worthy scientific pursuit. Why do you think it is not “real physics”? Why do you think the origins and evolution of the whole universe is irrelevant to science and the human condition? Why do you think less scientific knowledge is better for humanity (e.g., your “why bother” comment)? Do you actually have an understanding of the science behind the Theory. From your descriptions, it sounds like you are slamming a theory that you don’t understand (e.g., the Big Bang was not from a central distant point in the universe).
Theories (i.e., explanations) are the ultimate goals of science, not facts (i.e., data) or laws (i.e., statistical/mathematical descriptions). A Theory never becomes a Fact. Facts are gathered to prove/disprove/modify Theories.
The idea of government banning scientific inquiry is just reprehensible. Science does not proceed when popularity & politics become the driving force. I’m not talking about something like the banning of government funding for cloning research…a government can use its budget as it sees fit. But to consider outlawing free thinking is just sad on so many levels. I hope you reconsider your question and, if you are still unconvinced by Big Bang Theory, redirect your efforts to discussing the scientific facts that support other theories or that raise questions about Big Bang Theory. There are still a lot of questions in cosmology to be answered, but the overwhelming majority of experts agree that Big Bang Theory is currently the best explanation for what we know about the universe. Other theories can explain some aspects, but none as well and thoroughly as B.B.T.
