I was reading the paper a few days ago and saw an ad for a study at a local college, so I called just to see if it was anything interesting. I just got the packet of info they sent me, and I’m really tempted to go ahead with it. It’s for a new HPV vaccine. I would basically be going in for 8 test sessions. I would recieve the vaccine or placebo on the first, and the others would be basic physicals, with pelvics (blech) on 3 occasions. There will be financial compensation for all tests/visits.
Now, while I’m not really worried about getting HPV, I would see being vacinated against it as a Very Good Thing™ Then again, I would definitely frown upon losing all of my hair, or an extra limb (Wait a minute, new limb, eh? … Nah, still not worth it)
Horrible disfigurements aside, the risks for side effects seem very few, and even if I were in the Placebo group, I would still have the opportunity to be vaccinated at the end. The vaccine won’t be readily available for a few years.
So, anyone ever participated in a research study? Was it worth it? Should I do it?
