Should I be worried (Windows question)

Last night when I went to shut down my computer (Win 7 SP1) I got a message of don’t turn it off 24 updates to be installed
This morning 8 hours later it showed it was on #14
I’ve never seen updates take this long.
Should I be worried?
If the system is hung, what do I do next?

Look and see if there are any open icons on the taskbar or a window hidden behind the update window. Sometimes “updates” are actually new installs that require user interaction.

What taskbar? He’s almost certainly talking about the blue shut-down screen where it installs updates, restarts, then continues installing.

Windows normally makes a restore point before doing these updates. You’re usually safe if you have to power down in the middle of an update.

Best & most probable case, it’ll have to redo the downloads & installations.
Worst case, you’ll need a boot disk and have to manually restore the system. Then it’ll download & install the updates again.

It’s usually not a problem, Windows will recover and even reload the updates if needed. But it is unpredictable. The worst case where the system needs to be reloaded is very rare. If it’s acting funny go to Accessories >> System Tools >> Restore and you should see a restore point date before the update started. After restoring it will try to load the updates again in due time.

We had several machines that spent forever finishing their updates this patch Tuesday - literally still saying they were finishing the updates 4 hours or more after restarting. We took the decision to power cycle one of them and it came back just fine, so we did the rest.

My guess is something a bit broken in one of the updates that only affects specific hardware.

You’re right, I missed the restarting.

Thanks guys,
I feel better now. I’ll update when I get home.

Same here. We had three machines in our office hang up overnight during the updates.

My updates installed but bricked my computer – it won’t boot at all. :frowning:

I’ve mentioned this before, and it is why I do not recommend leaving automatic updates on. Wait them out to see what problems people are having, and for Microsoft to recall the bad updates.

I had the same problem happen to me. It took a complete repair install plus installing a hotfix to get back into Windows.

It’s why I’m a bit worried about Windows 10.

Life is good. Computer was shut down when I got home.
It booted up had to wait for updates to finish then all is good.

Well, I don’t have automatic updates, but I don’t recall that the age of the recommended update is easily available in the update list. Where can I find that?
