Should I buy my new cell phone through Amazon?

I’m putting this here rather than in general questions because I thought there might be an element of opinion in the answers…

I’m in need of a new cell phone. I’ve had my Samsung Flipshot for at least four years, I think. I like it and it’s always been more than adequate for my simple cellular needs, but lately its just taken a crap. Can’t charge it anymore, and either buying a new charger or a new battery would cost me actual money - whereas if I re-sign with Verizon, I can just get a whole new phone for less (or nothing!)

However…all I really need is a basic phone. Without a data plan. But, if I’m going to get a new phone, I’d really like to try something new and different. I can get another basic flip phone for nothing with a new contract, but I would like to try a phone with a qwerty keyboard. I just need something for the occasional call, the occasional text and the occasional picture op. So I would prefer something with as good a camera as I can get in a basic phone.

I have kind of decided that I like the LG Octane, but if I buy that from Verizon, it’s going to cost me $50. On the other hand, it looks like if I buy it through Amazon, it’s only a penny! Seems like the better option to me, but I have only ever bought my cell phones through my carrier.

So, is this the way I should go? Any potential problems by going through Amazon instead of Verizon? decisions, decisions…
