Should I call the police?

When my husband walked outside to leave for work, he saw a radio faceplate sitting on the hood of our truck. It was just the faceplate, and it looks quite new. This is the kind that you take into your house at night so someone who tries to steal your radio doesn’t get all of it. It has gold connectors where it would hook into the rest of the radio.

Nothing else seems to be disturbed, and our truck wasn’t broken into to indicate a string of vehicle breakins, so we’re not sure what it’s there for. Should we call the police in case somone’s car was broken into?

I considered it might be there under less suspicious motives. Someone might’ve been walking down the road (we have a lot of walkers on our road) and saw it lying on the curb next to our house. Thinking it was ours but not wanting to bother us, they set it on the hood for us to find.

What do you think?

What kind of area do you live in? Are you in a house apart from other houses, or are you in an apartment complex’s parking lot? If it were the latter (like me), I would wonder if someone parked next to you had removed it and left it on the hood absentmindedly (or if someone broke into the car next to you, stole the radio, and put the faceplate on your car’s hood).

But if you live in a house with no other cars nearby, then I’m at a loss. If it’s not yours, I don’t think you need to call the police - it’s not as if you know for sure that anything’s been stolen.

I live in a single-family house. In fact, my driveway is private and in order for someone to place it on my hood, they would’ve had to walk up to my house. And it’s nowhere near my neighbors’ driveways.

Hmm, on re-reading that sounds like I have a milelong driveway that someone has to hike. It’s really only about the length of two vehicles (if we pull all the way up, someone can pull up behind us in a small car).

I’d call the non-emergency police number. There could have been car thefts a few blocks over, and this could be useful information. Or it could be no help whatsoever. I’d give them a quick call and let them know – they can decide if it’s important or not.

I probably wouldn’t bother. However, you asked whether you should call, so go with Giraffe. Mind you, I don’t imagine the police will actually investigate unless you’re in a very sleppy community with its own police force.
