Starting about 2 months ago, I got on a pretty good exercise routine. Plenty of cardio, some weights, crunches, etc. Then I went on vacation for two weeks, and when I got home, I started getting sick. It feels like a chest cold, but there’s some sinus infection aspect to it, also. Went to the doc yesterday and got some zithromax.
So, should get back on my exercise routine? It’s basically been about 3 weeks since I did it (because of vacation and then feeling puny). Or, should I wait until I’m healthy?
As far as its effect on you, use your best judgment. If you feel like you have the energy to go work out, go for it.
As far as its effect on others at the gym, if you’re contagious don’t go. Wait until you’re better. Of course if you workout at home, this is a moot point.
When I took a weightlifting course we were told to NEVER work out (lifting or other stuff) if we were sick. Something about how it can mess with your heart, some kind of inflammation IIRC.
Most people with mild illnesses shouldn’t have trouble doing mild aerobic exercises. They should listen to their bodies, and back off if getting more tired than usual/appropriate for the level of exercise. Avoidance of muscle building exercise isn’t a bad idea for many tho, as the risk of muscle inflammation (from the body’s immune system fighting infection) might be elevated.
Those with chronic conditions and mild illnesses should check with their physicians first.
