A couple of weeks ago I got suspended from e-bay for supposedly spamming a bunch of users. I myself got four spam letters from “me” :dubious: E-bay investigated and discovered it was indeed not me who had sent the spam and reinstated my account. While this was going on I frantically changed a lot of on-line account sign-on ids and passwords.
I’m not an E-bay seller although I’m thinking of trying it out in the future. I’m not a big buyer either, having bought only a few items (some quite costly, however). My concern is that future sellers/buyers will recognize my id and not deal with me because of this spam incident.
And as long as I’m here, how was someone able to use my id to send spam? Wouldn’t they have to know my password? E-bay suggested that I got phished, but I know that never happened. I’ve never responded to any E-bay e-mail sent via e-mail. I’ve never even attempted to contact E-bay before this incident. Color me confused The only thing I can think of is about a year ago a volunteer organization I work with on-line had all their user id’s and passwords stolen???
Unless it was a massive spamming event, it’s pretty unlikely that you’ll ever have contact with the victims again anyway, but there’s nothing to stop you creating a new ID - I have one for buying and selling and a different one for posting on the eBay community forums (if you use your main ID, there are some people who will report your items for illusory infractions of the rules and in some cases, eBay will just pull the listings without even looking to see if you really broke the rule).
Many people keep one ID for buying and another for selling (so that they don’t so easily reveal their wholesale sources or the suppliers of their materials).
But if you have a good feedback rating on the existing account, it might be worth keeping.
If you are just a buyer, then I don’t think it’s worth getting a new account. I doubt if sellers would worry about a spamming incident: their main concerns are to get paid promptly, and not have dissatisfied customers leaving negative feedback. Spamming would have little to do with that.
Thanks for the replies G and M. I guess I’ll just keep the same user id. Mangetout, I never even considered using a different id for selling. Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll do that if I decide to sell some of the junk I’ve accumulated over the years.
