Should I get vaccinated against Polio? I was when Sabin vaccine came out

Interesting, the only time I’ve even seen a jet injector or had one used on me for a vaccine was for that.

One of my favorite behind-the-scenes movie stories has to do with the Sabin vaccine and its delivery method.

Brothers Richard and Robert Sherman, songwriters for Disney movies and attractions, were racking their brains trying to come up with an appropriate song for the heroine of the newest Disney movie in the pipeline. They wanted it to turn on a catchphrase that sounded like a proverb, like “a stitch in time saves nine”, but couldn’t quite seem to stick the landing. In the middle of all this, Robert Sherman’s son Jeffrey came home from school and told his dad they’d gotten their polio vaccines. Robert asked if it hurt, and Jeffrey said, “Oh, no, they didn’t use needles. They just put it on a sugar cube.” Inspiration struck, and Robert had the song idea ready when he met Richard the next morning at work…

“Just…a…spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down…”
