Should I go to class today: a hypothetical poll

In the past, there have been Pit threads about sick co-workers. In fact, I believe that today there is another thread which, while not espousing the exact same sentiments as “stay home, you sick freak!” could potentially reach that conclusion.

In light of this, I’ve decided to ask a (for all intents and purposes)* hypothetical question:

I am a college student, and I am sick today. I am certain that what I am sick with is contagious (say I caught it from someone else). I am not so sick that I cannot physically attend class, but I am sick enough that going to class would really, really suck. I would also be suffering from something rather like thewiz’s coworker’s ailment, in that I would be sniffling and/or blowing my nose every two nanoseconds.

Let’s assume that there are no pressing committments: no papers due, no tests, no lectures of highlighted importance. Let’s also assume that my previous absenses in the class have been few, but not non-existent (let’s say, one or two). In other words, my missing class would have no direct effect on my grade.

Should I go to class today?

On the one hand, I have an obligation to attend as many classes as possible. This would dictate attending class.

On the other hand, I have a moral obligation not to get the rest of the class sick for my own benefit. Since I am sneezing, coughing, and sniffling, this dictates that I should not have to go to class.

I’m at a loss: what do you think I should (hypothetically) do?

*[sub]This question is hypothetical. While the situation is, in fact, real, the posts in this thread will not have a chance to alter my opinion. I’m asking for people’s opinions on this only because I’m curious, not because I can’t make such a decision on my own.[/sub]

Speaking as a morally altruistic slacker, I think it is really important to stay home.

I have a bit of a cold right now too. It’s no worse than any of the other people in my classes that are sniffling and coughing, so I’m still going.

Should you go? If you have anything important coming up, then if I were you I would go. Since you don’t though, and I’m not you, I wouldn’t want you to go - especially if you were in one of my classes. I wouldn’t want you getting me any sicker.

Don’t go. You don’t have an obligation to attend as many classes as you can, you have an obligation to do as well as you can in each course. Attending a lecture when you know you will end up staring into space or sleeping the whole time is foolish. If you won’t get anything out of the class, you shouldn’t go, especially since you’ll gain a lot more benefit from not going, in terms of getting rest (and not infecting others).

If I learned anything from ten years of higher education, that’s it.

Your college is still in classes? Heck, we’re technically in the reading period before exams (they start Monday), and I’m working on my last exam today (take homes, for as much as I hate them, mean I get done way early).

But, looking at where you likely are in the semester, I’d say go, if only because exams are likely fairly close. The only exception to this would be if it’s a survey type class with lots of people in it, or if you are certain you can get the information from a classmate.

Lsura-- you guys get an honest-to-God Dead Week? I’m so jealous. The schools I’ve gone to called a certain period “Dead Week” as you weren’t supposed to have any tests that week and there were extended ‘quiet hours’, but they always still have classes scheduled so it’s a bit of a joke.
Stay home, get better, ask for notes from a chum.

STAY AT HOME!

Personally, I would go to class. That’s because I hate skipping class, I always really feel like I’m missing something. (No really… I skipped one class this semester… total.) If you have no similar compunctions, then stay home and heal.

Yeah, pretty much, I think. I know I didn’t have my Tuesday or Wednesday classes this week - I did have the Monday class, but we took the exam then. My other two are take-homes, so the actual scheduling of exams doesn’t affect me…they may have started today, though, and that would make it a two day reading period.
