I just bought hand soap with triclosan. Since, I learned triclosan was bad stuff. Should I return it? Or use it up and not buy a triclosan product again?
Actually, it was Antibacterial Liquid Soap- 40 oz, $2.50.
The only active ingredient is triclosan 0.15%. Not much, but.
Well, without a link, I’m not sure why you are convinced triclosan is bad stuff. I’m not saying it’s not bad, just that I don’t understand why you’d think so.
Whether to return it or not depends on a few factors:
- Do you still have the receipt?
- Is it from a store you go to frequently anyway?
- How much did it cost?
For me, if I was convinced something I had was not so great, if I still had the receipt, and it was a store I go to anyway, I’d return it, no matter what the cost. If I had the receipt, and it’s not a store I usually frequent, but it was expensive, I’d return it.
But. . .if you don’t have the receipt, it’s not costly, and it’s out of your way to return it and you’re convinced it’s bad stuff, just trash it and don’t buy anything else with triclosan.
ETA: having read your clarification, I’d trash it, if I were really convinced (or pretty much convinced) that it was bad stuff. BUT that much money is not a lot of money to me. Maybe to you it is. Maybe to you, it’s not much, but it’s a store you go to all the time anyway and you still have the receipt, so you have nothing to lose by returning it.
At any rate, if I were truly worried something was dangerous, I’d either return it or dispose of it. I wouldn’t use it.
FWIW, I’m generally opposed to the overuse of triclosan, and avoid buying it where I can. No need for the stuff everywhere – it’s next to useless in consumer soap, encourages resistance, people are too paranoid about bacteria, etc. But it’s not going to harm you, and in the big picture that one bottle of soap is just a drop in the ocean. You’re not going to single handedly breed the Plague That Kills All Humans.
Use it up, and just avoid buying triclosan in the future.
If you haven’t used it at all, or just a little, you can probably return it. Most stores now are pretty liberall with their return policy, something along the lines of “if for any reason you are not satisified, return for a full refund.” If you’ve used 2/3 of it, I’d say use up the rest, or if you’re really paranoid, discard it. But if you’ve only used a bit? get your money back.
That’s what I thought.
I filled the dispenser with 1/4 of product. I do have the receipt, and the original plastic bag, and I go by the store. The soap feels good and cleans my hands.
As you said it ain’t the plague. Learn, tho.

Depends on the store. If it’s a store with a policy of taking returns “any time for any reason”, then sure, take it back. Tell them why maybe someone will make a note of it. If it’s a dollar store type place then I would leave it alone, getting stuck with the occasional item you don’t want is the trade-off for bargain prices. Maybe give it to a thrifty friend, or just leave it in a gas station bathroom somewhere.
But I have a hunch asking for opinions on soap, not on people’s shopping habits …
As I understand it, you want to return this product because you’re not happy that it contains triclosan. Given that, I don’t think you should return it, since the store will lose money on the sale. I’m sure that the packaging included an ingredients list, so it’s not their fault you’ve changed your mind about wanting to use it. Either use it, give it away or toss it.
