By the way – what kind of call center to you work in, and do you live in Middle Tennessee? 
ETA: I just remembered you said a higher-than-average COL area, so I’m guessing ‘no’!
I’ve deflected the salary question with, “After considering my qualifications, I know you will be fair with an offer.” or “I’m open to considering an offer taking into consideration all of the compensation factors involved including salary”.
I don’t know if it’s “right” but it’s seemed to work for me.
I’m in a western suburb of Chicago.
