I started this thread a while back. I bought a copy of WinXP, and then reread an email from MS that I apparently won’t lose my email after all. So the question is, should I go ahead and install XP anyway?

If overall system speed would be affected, it’s a no-go.
With that configuration, I would definitely think twice about installing XP. What are your reasons for wanting to upgrade? XP will definitely benefit from having at least 1GB of RAM - 512 is a little cramped. The processor speed might also be a factor. I’m not sure you’ll see the same sort of performance from XP that you currently do from Win2k.
I ran WindowsXP very successfully for about 2 years on a PIII running at 450MHz (may it rest in piece), but I had maxed out the motherboard to 768MB of RAM, so I don’t know if the comparison is necessarily apples-to-apples. I’m pretty sure XP’s minimum is 512, and my experience with minimum requirements from Microsoft is that by “minimum” they mean “with this hardware and lots and lots of prayer.”
I’ve a 2.8GHz box with 512 of RAM. Running XP pro with no problems. Dell dimension 4700. (I should double my RAM, but things are working fine).
I wonder if its not time to upgrade? If 2K is working for you, I would probabaly not fix something that isn’t broken.
512 is plenty of RAM for XP. XP itself is going to use about 100, and everything else is just your applications which’ll waste as much ram on XP as on anything else.
Processor is simply irrelevant.
The “minimum specs” btw are 64 MB ram and a Pentium 233. XP pretty much predates most computers that exist today and a pIII 800 with 512 would’ve been high-end when XP came out. It’s the applications that keep getting more bloated.
Should be just fine. Make sure you back everything up first, preferably twice, before you do the upgrade install. And test the backups!
I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop with a PIII (mobile) 850 and 526 MB RAM running WinXP Home.
I use it in the parlor for streaming music, either through Pandora (via Firefox) or rips stored on our server. All this is through a Linksys wireless connection. It is stable, and once playing there are no problems. However, it is verrrryyyyy slow to switch between tasks–even to get to the shutdown menu.
Of course, slowness is relative. The only thing I can really compare it to at the moment is my desktop, which so outclasses it as to make it an unfair comparison.
