Should I use Guinness extra stout in my Frfijoles Borrachos recipe?

Title says it all. I was at the grocery store. I just needed one beer for my recipe. Problem is, the grocery store doesn’t really sell ONE beer. Just 6 packs and 12 packs. All I had to choose from was Guinness Extra Stout or Natural Light tall boy.

At the time, I thought Guinness was the obvious choice. Now I’m starting to second guess myself.

So… will it work?

I don’t know because I don’t drink beer of the “stout” variety.

I wouldn’t. Stout has the wrong flavor profile for that recipe. You want a lager, preferably a pils or Vienna style lager. Think Modelo, Tecate, Dos Equis. Go to the local 7-11 and grab a tall boy of Tecate.

I would be willing to try it, you know, for science. silenus is correct about what is traditionally used in that recipe. Since you’ve already procured the beer, however, I say go for it and report back.

Guiness has far too strong a flavor for frijoles borrachos. You’ll taste little else but the beer.

What kind of store sells only two types of beer?

The OP noted that they were looking to only buy a single can of beer for the recipe, and that limited their choices.

I personally would do it. Regular Guinness would definitely be okay, extra stout is a little more bitter, but I think would still be fine.

It worked. Different taste but my son and I both enjoyed it.

Told ya! :b

Guinness is a marvelous base for beef stews…

Interestingly enough, I don’t think I’ve ever had frijoles borrachos. So I just googled it right now, and the first recipe that came up even recommends dark beer.
