Should North Korea be kicked out of the United Nations?

…the US is morally bankrupt. AFAIAC. Russia and the United States are the two biggest threats to the world right now. I’m more worried about what America is going to do next than anything North Korea might do right now.

For right now, if you don’t live in South Korea or Japan you don’t need to worry about North Korea unless the radioactivity drifts over to wherever you happen to be, which is unlikely.

…I’m much more worried about America intervening in yet another country than something that hasn’t happened nor is likely to happen. I’m just curious as to why you why the actions of your government don’t seem to concern you.

And while you are at it: give the land back.

I trust my government and always have. I can’t give their land back because 1) I don’t own it, and 2) I don’t have the authority to give it back, do you? If Hawaii or Texas want to succeed from the union they are welcome to try. It didn’t work out too well the last time, but you never know.

…why?

That’s a subject for another thread. I’m sorry, you don’t.

…I trust my government. My government doesn’t happen to be yours. I just happen to think that your government, the way that it treats its own people, the way that it treats much of the rest of the world, is morally bankrupt. If by your standards North Korea should be kicked out of the United Nations, then the United States should have been kicked out long ago as well. Don’t you agree?

No, I don’t agree. I love my country and will defend it until the day I die. Case closed.

…well this certainly puts your OP into perspective then.

“My country, right or wrong. If right, kept right. If wrong, made right.”

The US is a very unique country. Just like all the others. I think we are getting off-topic here - maybe a separate thread on if the US is a force of good or bad in the world today would be a better place to further that topic?

…I think the comparisons are useful. The OP thinks that we should kick out North Korea because of the things that the government does: but would not, under any circumstances consider kicking out the US for things that the government has done for one simple reason: they “love their country and will defend it until the day they die.”

So it really isn’t about what North Korea has done. Those things aren’t irrelevant. And I think that it’s important, in context of the debate, to point that out.

Nobody is getting kicked out of the UN. It’s a moot question. If you had read the whole thread, you would know that. I posited the question to see if anyone thought it was a good idea. Nobody did, so I played devil’s advocate, and still, nobody thought it was a good idea to kick anyone out of the UN. I accept that reality. North Korea can join the Security Council for all I care.

I’ve been to Japan and South Korea and talked to them about NK, and they are very worried. It’s too late to do anything about the NK regime, so we must let the chips fall where they may. The US can wipe NK entirely off the map if it attacks either SK or Japan. Let’s hope that’s enough to deter a maniacal paranoid dictator who chooses to starve his people.

…to be clear here: I was addressing your claim of moral superiority. The one you made a couple of hours ago. The US doesn’t get to claim the moral high ground.

I was just referring to North Korea, not the rest of the world. If you want to put North Korea morally higher than the US, go right ahead, but don’t ask me to join you.

…I think history will judge that the United States will be seen as one of the most morally bankrupt societies in the history of the world. The way it treats its poor, the marginalised, everything from the lack of universal healthcare to the massive income disparity between the rich and the poor. I think North Korea are bad. I think that they are being ruled by an evil dictator and are a real threat to world peace.

But on a spectrum? The United States is worse. Because it does all these bad things and then pretends that it didn’t happen. Millions have died because of the US regime. Governments have toppled. You can’t claim the high ground here.

Since you are entitled to your opinion, I can claim anything I want. BTW, what country do you live in?

…New Zealand.

There are some benefits to living in a country that is very small and doesn’t matter much on the world stage. You aren’t expected to be the world’s police, and get criticized for mistakes made in furtherance of that. If people even remember that your country exists, you still have far fewer opportunities for criticism.

Everyone knows all about the US and all our flaws. Most people probably haven’t heard of the history of, and continuation of, the extreme racism that exists in a country like New Zealand, because most people know nothing at all about New Zealand other than that’s where the LOTR movies were filmed.

…we can completely ignore what America does on the world stage and focus exclusively on how it treats its own people if you like. As I pretty much have. If North Korea should be kicked out because of the way that it treats its people, then so should the United States of America.

Well I live here. I’m tangata whenua. Ngāpuhi. My great-grandad on my fathers side was Samoan. A member of the Mau. He was murdered by New Zealand colonial forces. If the only thing that you know about New Zealand the fact that this is where the LOTR movies were filmed, I’d be happy to enlighten you on our rather extensive racist history. Because I have to live with it every day. All you had to do was ask.
