We did and do cheek-kisses only in my family, but I don’t see how it’s a big deal. To each their own, man.
Except.
DH got herpes (cold sores) from a family member kissing him on the lips as a child. I’d like to know who so I can smack them - it’s an added annoyance to my life and I think they should have known better.
My mom and her family are all lip-kissers. My grandmother (before she died) and aunts always kiss other family members - even adults - on the lips as a greeting. I’m 41 and my mom still goes for my lips when I see her (which is only a few times a year).
I usually do a slight head-turn so the kisses kind of land on the corner of the mouth.
When my wife joined our family – especially when she was new – it freaked her the fuck out. Now she dreads family gatherings because she is afraid someone will try to kiss her on the lips. Which would probably happen.
It’s only the women, though. The men don’t kiss each other.
Do you as an adult sit on your parents’ laps? If not, why not?
What’s funny about your questions is while I do not sit on my parents laps (the thing you posit is okay for small children to do), I do still kiss my mother on the lips (which you do not think is okay for small children to do).
If my old mum was still alive and there was restricted seating, (always assuming I didn’t just give up my seat to her) , I wouldn’t think twice about her sitting on my lap.
If I’d have sat on her lap she’d have been squashed.
Kissing her on the lips however would be unhealthy.
On the cheek yes, on the lips no.
I also find the thought of (as posters upthread have said they do ) brothers and sisters kissing each other on the lips worrying to say the least.
As parents, would it really not worry you if you caught your teenage children, brother and sister kissing each other on the lips ?
Would you honestly let them carry on doing; it without comment as a very minimum, at that time and as a regular habit in the future ?
Seriously, like Terraplane and everyone else and their dog has said, we’re not talking about being locked in embrace, kissing passionately. We’re talking about a very brief peck. Muah. That’s it. So no, I would not be bothered. Why on Earth would I be? Yes, I’d be bothered if I walked into one of their bedrooms and they were locking lips. Please tell me you see the difference between a quick kiss goodbye (a one second muah) and full on smooching.
My Mom was a nurse so lip kissing was out. I kiss them on the cheek. Kissing peoples lips is a good way to get lip Herpes or a cold. My dog always tries for the lips but I turn my head!
I don’t see a problem with affection as long as it’s not disgusting. I’m picturing Brittany Spears french kissing Madonna on stage. I’d have to go gargle with Listerine after that.
Well, he’d been getting cold sores on a regular basis since childhood, long before he was kissing girls. It’s not like the herpes virus just floats around on the air.
