Should police use any force necessary?

As an EMT, I am supportive of police officers and do not envy them their job at all. I was reading This article and it got me thinking: should police be using any means necessary to catch suspected criminals? Personally, I believe so (within reason) as they have to protect us and themselves. But what constitutes within reason?

No, not ‘any force necessary’ by any means, the police already abuse their pursuit abilities with high speed chases. Roughly 80-90% of high speed chases start because of a non-violent traffic infraction and the criminal can be arrested at his/her home later that day without problem. Instead of waiting until they go home and arresting people without incident the police prefer to chase people at 80mph through school zones.

I think the police already put the lives of the public in unneccesary risk and refuse to take any responsibility for the consequences of their actions when something bad happens with traffic pursuits, giving them more leeway to pursue and capture people will only make things worse.

There is also the fact that police will go physically overboard if they dislike a suspect, knowing there will be no consequences to their actions.

“A Department of Justice study concludes that only 10 percent of all pursuits involve violent felons who put the public in imminent danger. Consequently, 90 percent of all pursuits involve people who have committed minor traffic violations and non-violent crimes and, in many cases, can be caught later in a safer way … safer for peace officers and innocent bystanders.”
