We always hear sports commentators say things like “missed calls are part of the game”, but should they literally be part of the game? Obviously a computer has the ability to get the right call every time, but should they model some margin for error to be more “realistic”?
Not just “no” but “hell no”.
Games already have the power to allow you to win or lose anyway, so this would just cement that.
Generally, no.
I suppose one could make, say, a fighting game with missed calls and where a player can use skill to get away with illegal blows. You could even have a pre-fight phase where you choose which and how much performance-enhancing drugs to use to increase your advantage while minimizing the odds of being disqualified. The deleterious health effects in middle age would be noted but would of course not influence the game. Soccer games could have a mini-game where you try to convincingly fake being injured to give the other team a penalty. I can see that being fun to play although it would have to be played for humor.
In real life, we accept missed calls because we have no choice but to accept them. But nobody likes them. If we can put in a little effort to avoid them, we should. If we naturally avoid them with no effort at all and would need to actually put in a little effort to get them, then all the more reason to avoid them.
They already do, and yes they should. You gotta protect on 2-strike counts. It’s part of the game. Here’s a successful challenge in Madden.
Jesus H. Christ, that first link - sports games are really getting good, aren’t they? I haven’t seen or played one in forever. I might have to buy a PS4 just for that game.
Why the heck is the crowd in Indianapolis booing on that successful Madden challenge?
Realistic, yes, but the Astros’ uniforms said “Texas” in that clip. It must have been a pre-release version. MLB The Show is one of the most realistic sports games around. It not only has all the union players, it has all of the real-life managers and coaches, too.
Gosh, as long as sports video games have missed calls, why don’t we have them spill beer on you? Or have your PS4 demand you build it a new TV cabinet or else it threatens to move to another city?
sure why not… just make sure you can turn it off and on via the options menu or just have it on the hard modes
No.
My sport is cricket, and the current cricket game is Don Bradman’s Cricket (or the Ashes version of the same game) where they do introduce the current system of appealing a decision to go to the TV umpire. Unfortunately, for this to work, it means that the computer umpire has to get some decisions wrong and, in the game engine, you’re not really given the information you need to have confidence in using up your appeal.
In the sport, the idea of the appeal system is to avoid giving calls that are obviously wrong in retrospect. The computer doesn’t, and shouldn’t, get them that wrong.
I’m pretty sure the major soccer games have had a ‘dive’ button for some years now. In other words, you can use it to try to draw a penalty you wouldn’t normally be entitled to. Presumably you also get penalised if you use it and get ‘caught’ by the computer referee.
