In Seattle the mayor is asking for an investigation and possible expulsion of a socialist city council person for her actions. These including inciting riots and leading a protest in front of the mayors home.
I think the last one was the biggie since from what I read the address where the mayors family is supposed to be secret but this woman lead a protest to her doorstep anyways so now the mayor feels danger for her family.
I think revealing the mayor’s home is too far and she should be expelled. Attacking the mayor in such a personal way is wrong – she should have led the march to city hall.
Can you point to the part where she incited riots? I didn’t see that in my brief read of the local source. If inciting riots and encouraging protests against political leaders was reason to expel a politician, well…
Yes, I find that weird too. Can a person with a socialist agenda really become a city council member in the USA? I mean, socialists can’t even win seats in Romania, where I live.
ETA: The Fox article shows the mayor statement, where he claims the city council member is a “self-described” socialist. Well, I live in a formerly communist country and I know that the term socialism is sometimes used inappropriately in the USA, but the article does not offer enough information.
I see the marching to the mayor’s house as the least bad thing she is accused of. While demonstrating in front of anyone’s house is usually wrong and evil, the mayor should not get a special pass because she is a politician. She allowed CHAZ to set up where other people live and called it a block party. If she is fine with them doing it to other people, she should be fine with having it done to her.
Yes, a member of the socialist party can be expected to positions in the US. There are no restrictions on political parties at all here that I know of.
I didn’t see what else she was accused of in the local paper cited. Can you elaborate?
Note, don’t bother citing Fox News. After their descriptions of CHAZ as some sort of anarchist riot, I’m not going to believe anything they say about this.
Usually they use the term progressive here, but some do use socialist. Bernie, as thorny_locust pointed out, and he’s not the only one though the most prominent as far as I know. Usually in more liberal areas (such as Seattle) you can get elected as a ‘socialist’, though in the US at least there seems to be constant confusion as to what that term actually means. To most Americans, ‘socialist’ basically means someone who supports social programs such as universal healthcare or other such things. In Romania where you are from you probably have a clearer idea of what an actual ‘socialist’ is, and it’s not about social programs.
I am also puzzled as to why the OP put that in, however, as it doesn’t really seem relevant to the actual question being asked (i.e. ‘Should this Seattle city councilwoman be expelled?’ for leading a protest at the Mayor’s private residence). I’d say the answer should be the same if we are talking about a Democrat, Republican or any other party member doing this.
She is accused of using her political office to raise funds for political purposes, encouraging people to occupy a police station, and most recently of allowing a bunch of protesters into City Hall when it was closed because of coronavirus. The OP had a link to a non Fox News site for you to read about it , unless you are boycotting all news that does not conform to your worldview.
First off, here is the Seattle Times article for those who (quite reasonably) don’t trust Fox.
She doesn’t. She gets a ‘special pass’ from having her home address revealed under the state’s confidentiality program because specific and credible threats were made against her and her family dating to her time as a US Attorney.
Also, don’t conflate Sawant’s ‘Socialist’ with Sanders’s. Sanders is a social democrat, at least by his public statements, which basically aligns with Scandanavian-style safety nets. Sawant is a hardcore socialist who wants to nationalize major businesses, particularly Boeing and Amazon.
Hi! Thanks for your response. I’m definitely not interested in this topic enough to respond any further, especially with snarky responses like this one. Bye!
Yes, her party affiliation isn’t relevant.
The reasons that the mayor wants the investigation are
Potential employment (hiring/firing) violations
Election and election funding rules violations
Involvement with CHOP/CHAZ
The protest by the mayor’s house
The first two are things that I’m very concerned about and think should be investigated and, depending on the outcome of the investigation, expulsion might be an appropriate consequence. I, personally, am not that interested in the third. And for the fourth, it seems like the councilperson did not start, did not plan, did not lead, and did not determine the route of the protest - but she was there.
Again, not that it’s relevant, Seattle’s mayor and council seats are non-partisan offices and elections. Party preferences do not appear on the ballot for those offices. Sawant identifies as a socialist and a member of the Socialist Alternative party.
So you know, or must know by now, that Fox News is not a reliable source, and there are many, many other sources you could have used, yet of your 2 sources you chose Fox News as one of them. To most of us, that tells us that you likely have questionable judgment on pretty much everything.
You’d be much better off if you stuck with middle-of-the-road media for your news. And you might have a little more credibility on this board.
That’s against the rules? I thought it was required. Certainly every member of Congress does this all the time. (I’ve heard it said that as soon as one is elected to the House or Senate, one must immediately start raising money for the re-election campaign.)
