It would be the perfect thing to put over left over egg salad in a bowl or maybe to wrap a half used onion in-- if only I knew how to use it. I could never get that nice, drum-like seal because I could never get the stupid metal teeth to actually cut the stupid plastic film. Nor can I get the stupid plastic film to stick to anything but its stupid self. And the stupid cardboard box ends up all soft in the middle where the stupid little sticky part that’s supposed to hold the stupid plastic film while you don’t tear it with the stupid metal teeth.
Obviously Tupperware or even ziplock bags are more expensive than cling film. So if you need to wrap something temporarily, cling film is a better choice. Also if you want to cover a plate of food to take someplace.
But in my experience actual Saran wrap brand cling film works better than the generic supermarket product. I think the Saran wrap stuff is made of thicker plastic.
Yep. I think I’m genetically incapable of using cling film without creating a bunched-up mess. Checking the drawers, it’s Saran Premium wrap that I have, and it hates me just as much as any other brand (looks like I also have a Glad-brand one in there, too, that I’ve apparently given up on.)
I pretty much just use Tupperware-type resealable containers or zip-lock bags. Fuck cling film.
I cannot stand the stuff. I even tried keeping it in the freezer to see if that would make it not as flimsy. I just don’t buy it anymore, haven’t in years, it just doesn’t work for me.
It’s become a lot easier for me since I stopped trying to cut the cling wrap on the edge of the box. I take out the roll (open box at end and slide out), lay a length of plastic on the cutting board and cut it with a knife. Actually, nowadays I just rip it with my hands and, with a little caution, it doesn’t stick to itself too badly. Works very well with onions but also for bigger things, like when you want to cover a plate or a pot.
We use Crystal Cling Wrap, from Costco. It sticks well to dishes, but not so well to itself. The 18-inch wide wrap is large enough for anything we need it for, the blade actually makes a neat cut, and the 3000’ roll lasts for several years.
I suspect you’re simply using the wrong brand of plastic wrap.
If I buy the “professional” stuff, I can get it to work, at the cost of a really sharp cutting edge and some blood sacrifice on my part. I have a box on hand for the rare cases when I need it, but mostly I use tupperware or tinfoil or plastic bags instead.
Mr. Athena hates it too, and it took me a while to figure out why.
He tries to pull off a piece THEN put it on whatever he’s trying to wrap. It sounds like that’s what a lot of folks in this thread do as well. I agree, if you try to use it like that, I’d hate the stuff.
You need to pull it out of the box right onto the thing you’re trying to wrap, THEN tear it off. Voila. Easy as pie.
This video demonstrates what I’m saying at about the 20 second mark.
