A sample of what may issue forth from my car speakers on a given day:
Apocolyptica- The Hall of The Mtn King
Black Keys- Fever
Bad Religion- True North
Lucinda Williams- Those Three Days
Much other stuff from Beethoven to Pink Floyd to Animals As Leaders
Wow, only four songs? I will go with stuff I have found in the past few years, just to narrow it down a bit. All on Youtube.
Chasing Shadows - Amirah
Tech N9ne - Fragile (ft. Kendrick Lamar, ¡MAYDAY! & Kendall Morgan)
Bonobo - Black Sands
The Neighbourhood - Afraid (explicit video warning, it’s a half second shot of a penis.)
Also, cool thread! I always love music discovery threads.
Nope! I taped that one off the radio back in the day. People think I am crazy when I tell them Milla Jovovich was a recording artist before she broke into movies.
Triple Science - Amon Tobin
Menouthis I - E.S. Posthumus
Cornered - Bill Laswell, Toshinori Kondo, Eraldo Bernocchi.
Phobophile - Cryptopsy
Shake Your Rump by the Beastie Boys
Spanish Flea by Herb Alpert
Boogie On Reggae Woman by Stevie Wonder
Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson
“We play both kinds of music here. Country and Western!”
Slow Down - Wyclef Jean
Going Back to Harlan - Emmylou Harris
Livin on A Prayer - Bon Jovi
Ebay - Weird Al Yankovich
Solid Gone- Doc and Merle Watson
Carolina Hard Core Ecstasy- Frank Zappa
No Sleep Til Brooklyn- Beastie Boys
Dust My Broom- Elmore James
To clarify, these were among the last 10 songs played off of the SD chip I inserted in my car’s sound system. The SD chip contains a selection comprising maybe 5% of my music collection. So, not quite as “concentrated” a selection as a typical iPod (I think), but pretty close.
Touch Me I’m Going To Scream- Part 2 by My Morning Jacket
Night Moves by Bob Seger
Fitzpleasure by alt-J
Peace Frog by The Doors
No iPod, but breadth…?
Precious Memories
Backfield in Motion
Rolling in the Deep
Pie Jesu
…which leaves out the depth.
First 4 songs that came up when I put my iPod on shuffle:
Cibo Matto - Deja Vu
Yo La Tengo - If It’s True
Bob Mould - If You’re True (Live)
Eric B. & Rakim - Don’t Sweat the Technique
I don’t own an Ipod either (I though I was the only one), but here’s favorite songs from my CD/LP collection
It’s My Party, Lesley Gore
My Favorite Things, John Coltrane
If We’re Not Back In Love By Monday, Merle Haggard
Let’s Lynch the Lanlord, Dead Kennedys
It’s surprising how many people don’t have an iPod.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
I could go insane trying to second-guess myself on displaying my range* with four songs so I’ll go the lazy semi-random route like so many others.
Do I Wanna Know? - Arctic Monkeys
Just A Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody - Louis Prima
Cat Fancy - Tacocat
Never Going Back to Memphis - Shemekia Copeland
I used to use an MP3 player but these days I just use a USB drive in my car stereo or use Google Music at home (with my stuff uploaded to it). I suppose if I was going to spend the day out and wanted music I might dust it off to avoid the data/battery usage on my phone from streaming music. I suppose I could put music directly on my phone but never felt inspired to.
- I don’t necessarily think I have some huge eclectic range and decided at some point that I’m fine with that and just enjoying what I enjoy. I still seek out new music and sometimes find stuff outside my normal spectrum but I’ve come to peace with the idea that I’ll never go from Peruvian pan flute music to old Soviet cartoon themes when hitting random play.
Yeesh, only four? This’ll be tough.
War Ensemble - Slayer
A Celtic Medley - Béla Fleck and the Flecktones
One Day More - Les Misèrables
Symphony No. 3 (Organ), 2nd Movement - Camille Saint-Saëns
Obviously, diacritics mean good music.
I’ll hit shuffle (on my computer; I don’t have an iPod, but I do have an iPhone, but my iPhone only has a small sampling of music) and see what comes up:
- Rudy Can’t Fail - The Specials
- Monster - Kanye West
- Naught More Terrific Than Man - Stereolab
- Eat - Flop
From my most recent randomish play history…
White Stripes - Ball and a Biscuit
Les Claypool Frog Brigade - Long in the Tooth
Cheap Trick - Dream Police
Danielle Dax - Big Hollow Man
It’s pretty reflective of my current listening phase, at least for the past month or so. I drift around though, heavy metal, classic blues, folk, electronica…ask again next week and it will look completely different.
Chevelle “The Clincher”
Bjork “Army Of Me”
Zac Brown Band “Colder Weather”
Porno For Pyros “Cursed Female”
Ugh. I’m getting my Specials and My Clash mixed up. It was “A Message to you Rudie” but the Specials.
