I recently downloaded the “Shred” utility. It has an option that allows one to shred the free space on one’s hard drive. I don’t quite understand the advantage (if any) of doing this.
Is shredding free space worth doing?
Thanks for any input.

It sounds like a security feature to make and old files that used to be stored there unrecoverable.
Assuming we’re all thinking of the same “Shred” program, I agree with k2dave.
It’s only worth doing if you have once stored, and subsequently deleted, sensitive data on the HD and you want to ensure this cannot be recovered. There are various “undelete” utilities out there, you see.
The Shred program that I have was originally published in PC Magazine. The copyright is held by Ziff Davis Media. If any of that matters.
The two posts above make perfect sense to me. Thanks for the input.
I consider that my question has been answered, if any mods want to close this thread.
