"Shug Avery" from The Color Purple

Who is the woman who played “Shug”?

The woman who played “Shug Avery” in The Color Purple has an awesome voice. Did she record any music or did she sing just for the movie? My favorite song is when she sings to her dad (the preacher) that sinners have soul too.

The Internet Movie Database says that Shug was played by, get this: Margaret Avery.

Margaret Avery’s singing voice was dubbed by Tata Vega. Margaret Avery was not pleased.

Purely trivia, so sorry for the hijack: The original choice for the role was Tina Turner (both as actress and singer). She loved the book and was very interested, but ultimately declined because
1- she could make a LOT more money touring (and this was when she still needed the money)
2- playing a promiscuous bisexual alcoholic could have damaged the career that she had fought so undeniably long and hard to jump start (and who can blame her for being concerned?)
If she had known then what a huge success and landmark the movie would be, perhaps she’d have taken it.

You shole is ugly! HahaHA!

[sub]sorry. i just had to get that out.[/sub]

Sampiro, that’s interesting. But I can’t see Tina playing the part of Shug. She would have been anachronistic.

Margaret Avery also ended up being (temporarily) turned a lovely shade of gray in the original “Lathe of Heaven.”
