I get to the screen that says “Windows is shutting down” and it just hangs and hangs and hangs until I finally say “to hell with it” and turn it off at the CPU which of course makes the damn thing go through SCANDISC as punishment to me for not shutting down “windows properly”. So what should I do? I did a search on the above subject and was surprised to see a null return, so I’m posting it here. Sure would be great to have a computer tech section.
Hey man, I know this problem. Win98 has a serious shut down problem, so I am no longer affliated with the OS. I am an all Win2000 man, and I no longer have the problem. There is no fix for this, sorry about that
I had this problem with Windows 95 and the culprit was Norton Utilities. I uninstalled it and everything worked fine. There are actually a whole slew of things that can cause this. Try typing in shutdown problems in the Microsoft knowledge base and go from there.
It helps to know which version of Win 98 you have. Either way, there are fixes available for your shutdown problem. Start here.
To check which version Windows 98 you have, right click on the My Computer icon and select properties. On the General tab, you’ll see what version you have.
hey, well i can’t tell you much about windows not shitting down but i learned a really good trick from someone who works in the it dept at my work. if scandisk comes up and like me you have no patience to wait for it to run, you can skip over the whole procedure by hitting the “x” key twice. at any time in the process you can do this to skip right to the end or even at the beginning when it says “hit any key for scandisk” if you hit “x” twice it will skip over the whole the thing!
There are several issues with this. In addition to what JuanitaTech said, there are a couple patches available from Microsoft that might fix the problem without messing with anything else. Go to Windows Update and click Product Updates. There should be a couple of updates labeled as types of “shutdown” updates.
Kristina: As opposed to…? Got a good laugh out of that one! Thanks for the tip about getting out of scan disk. I do it at work (on a T3), but didn’t realy know if it was kosher to do it on my home system.
