Shuttle Fuel Gauges vs. Launch

How far would NASA go to get off today’s launch? Can we really trust that the fuel gauge problem was really fixed? It almost sounds like NASA would accept a stuck fuel gauge (or, signal error) just to get off a launch. What if two fuel cells had failed this time? Is that accpetable?

Also, if something caused Discovery to be scrubbed, could NASA have the Atlantis Shuttle on stand-by? Or, is there a presumption that the same failure (whatever it may be) might plague both shuttles?

Just wondering… What say you?
